What do you get when you mix Margot Robbie, Carey Mulligan and a woman out for revenge? A movie that, by the trailer alone, is going to have us on the edge of our seats the entire time.
In Promising Young Woman, Carey Mulligan plays med student turned waitress, Cassie, who unexpectedly left college when an unexplained trauma happened to her – likely sexual assault – and who now wants revenge against all the men who pretend they’re ‘nice guys’.
The trailer starts with Cassie pretending to be drunk and alone in a bar, barely able to sit up straight, when a man, played by Adam Brody, comes over to check on her. “Every week, I go to a club. I act like I’m too drunk to stand. And every week, a nice guy comes over to see if I’m okay,” she says in voiceover.
When the guy, this time Brody, attempts to take advantage of her, she reveals that she’s totally sober – and chaos ensues.
The drama is already giving us serious Killing Eve vibes – which is no coincidence given the director is Emerald Fennell , who took over from Phoebe Waller-Bridge for the show’s second season – and even a little of Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, especially in the scene where Mulligan is shown wielding a scalpel while wearing a latex nurse costume and rainbow hair.
An official synopsis for the thriller/drama reads, “Everyone said Cassie was a promising young woman…until a mysterious event abruptly derailed her future. But nothing in Cassie’s life is what it appears to be: She’s wickedly smart, tantalizingly cunning, and she’s living a secret double life by night. Now, an unexpected encounter is about to give Cassie a chance to right the wrongs of the past in this thrilling and wildly entertaining story.”
With Margot Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, backing the project and stars such as Alison Brie, Connie Britton, Adam Brody, Bo Burnham, Jennifer Coolidge, Laverne Cox and Max Greenfield all set to appear, we already can’t wait for the release of Promising Young Woman.
Promising Young Woman is set to be released in cinemas in April 2020.
