Netflix’s new thriller series, Pieces Of Her was significantly (and understandably) delayed due to the not-so-little Covid pandemic, but its release in February this year proved it was well worth the wait—and the same could be said for a second season of the gripping show.

The eight-part series follows mother-daughter duo Laura and Andy (played by Toni Collette and Bella Heathcote, respectively), who witness a shooting at a diner. When Laura takes down the gunman with an apparent ease, Andy sees her mother in a whole new way. From there, she unlocks a series of secrets her mother has long-harboured, revealing the real person behind the quiet suburban mum.

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Karin Slaughter, Pieces Of Her was destined for success with a Hollywood great like Collette helming the cast list. What’s more, despite the series being set in the US, much of it was filmed in Sydney, Australia—her home.

“It was dreamy!” Collette told marie claire Australia in an exclusive interview, adding that working with Heathcote, who reigns from Melbourne, made the experience all the more enjoyable.

“You have to be so vulnerable as an actor and you’re standing in front of a lot of people, much of the time, being very emotional… watching Bella [Heathcote] ease into it and find her way, it was just a beautiful thing to behold and it made me love her more and more. It was very easy to care for her as my daughter on-screen.”

The pair’s dynamic is undeniable, and they carry the whole show in a way that makes it incredibly watchable—despite several intense scenes making us want to look away for fear of jumping out of our own skin.

But it was the final episode, and more specifically the final twist at the end that really left us hoping for more.

Will there be a season 2 of Pieces of Her

Netflix has yet to comment on whether a second season is on the cards, but going by its resounding success both in Australia and globally (it reach the number one spot on the streaming platform within a week of its release) there’s every chance the company will develop a second instalment.

That said, it pays to note that given the series is based on the book by Karin Slaughter, the second season would require a brand new original script.

Look, we’re going to safely assume that Netflix has access to some pretty amazing writers (or perhaps Slaughter herself might lend a hand?), so there is hope…

What would happen in the second season?

As we saw at the end of season one, Andy and Laura (whose real name is Jane) finally see Nick taken down for the killing of Laura’s father, Martin Queller, years ago.

But as the episode comes to an end, we learn that Laura/Jane had been the one to give the gun to Grace, the killer of her father who also worked with Nick. Laura/Jane had wanted to rid herself of his influence after falling pregnant to Nick, which was  something her dad didn’t approve of.

To add to the suspense, Laura/Jane’s brother Jasper knew that his sister played a part in the killing, and his final scene ended with him telling present-day Laura that he’ll “be in touch”. Andy meanwhile has also deduced that her mum was involved in Martin’s death.

There, we’re left with the unanswered question: what will happen to Laura and Andy now that the truth has unravelled? Slaughter’s novel concludes with them both returning to their normal lives, but the loose end in the Netflix series certainly suggests that there could be more to come.

When will the second season be released?

If season two gets the green light, we can likely expect the second season to drop sometime in 2023. Production for Pieces of Her season one took place in early 2021—around a year before it was released. A similar time frame sets a realistic expectation for the second instalment. Fingers crossed…
