No excuse is a bad excuse to have more Cillian Murphy on our screens.
The Oscar winner is set to reprise his role as gangster (slash beloved bad-boy) Thomas Shelby in a film adaptation of hit series Peaky Blinders.
Murphy will return to the lawless streets of Birmingham in a story written by series creator Steven Knight.
The British period crime drama released its sixth and final season in 2022 and while a feature film has always been intended to follow, some fans began to lose hope after two years of silence on the subject.
However, last September the show’s official account posted a cryptic Instagram message about the future of the franchise. To mark the 10-year anniversary of Peaky Blinders season one, the show’s social media accounts shared a quote from Peaky Blinders creator, Steven Knight, saying “the story is not yet over”.
“It hardly seems believable that it’s 10 years since Tommy Shelby first rode that black horse through the streets of Birmingham,” Knight wrote.
“The phenomenal global success of the show is down to the brilliance and hard work of the loyal team that makes it happen. Ten years on and the story is not yet over. Watch this space.”
Finally, in June it was confirmed that the story will be continued with the backing of Netflix—and that Murphy is, in fact, on board.
“It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me…It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders,” said Murphy via the streamer. “This is one for the fans.”

What Will The Peaky Blinders Movie Be About?
It’s understood that the new film will take the place of a seventh season, and pick up where he series left off.
In a statement to Deadline, Knight teased that the film will “be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full-on Peaky Blinders at war.”
Knight’s nod to war was most literal, too. The writer also told the outlet that the next chapter of the period epic will be set in World War II.

At this stage, we don’t know who else will be joining the film, including whether any of the series cast will be back.
When Will The Peaky Blinders Film Be Released?
With filming only starting in the West Midlands this September, it’s likely the film won’t be released until at least late 2025 or more likely, 2026.
