When actor Patrick Dempsey was asked to attempt an Aussie accent on live TV, the Greys Anatomy actor decided to go one better – and try out a little Australian slang.
The result was amusing – for all the wrong reasons.
“Traveller,” he said, “Traveller’s a beer you travel with right?”
Today show host Karl Stefanovic immediately burst into laughter, while the movie star, who is in Australia to promote his latest film Bridget Jones Has a Baby, merely looked confused.
“What’s a traveller? Have I just alienated everyone in the country?” he asked, while Richard Wilkins told him “You’re not supposed to say that”.
(Don’t know what traveller is? It’s a man’s erection.)
It’s not the first time things have gotten a little lost in translation on breakfast TV. One of our favourite TV moments (possibly ever) came when BBC breakfast presenter Susanna Reid interviewed Downton Abbey star Dan Stevens. She said to him “You must have had to beat off a lot of American men to get this part.”
Stevens promptly dissolved into helpless giggles, while a wide-eyed Reid managed to make the situation even worse. “Why does that make you giggle? Did you not have to beat them off?”
Happy Tuesday!
