Olivia Wilde is no stranger to bringing strong female leads to the big screen. Not only has she played roles that range from skilled warriors to quick-witted doctors, her directorial debut Booksmart received critical acclaim for depicting the teenage experience both accurately and intelligently. Now, she’s taking her expertise to the land of superheroes.
Deadline reports Wilde is working on directing a female-led superhero film for Marvel, which is rumoured to be a Spider-Woman adaptation. While details remain scarce, the actress has been dropping hints on Twitter, including one that alludes to the long-awaited comic book adaptation.

According to reports, the film will offer up a “completely revamped” take on the iconic hero in collaboration with Booksmart writer Katie Silberman.
Wilde will also join the small club of female directors who have been at the helm of Marvel films in the past. Others have included Anna Boden (who co-directed Captain Marvel), Cate Shortland (Black Widow) and most recently, Nia DaCosta, who will be helming the Captain Marvel sequel starring Brie Larson.
Over the years, Spider-Woman has been the alter ego of various women in the Spider-Man universe, including Gwen Stacy, Mary Jane Watson and Jessica Drew. It remains to be confirmed which direction Wilde and Silberman will choose to take on for the new project.
Although, Jessica Drew is the character’s most known alter ego, having been originally introduced in the 1970s. Drew is a bounty hunter and private investigator who was exposed to radioactive spider DNA while in utero, which gave her superhuman powers, which includes Spider-Man’s famous web-slinging skills, but with the added ability to shoot and “venom-blasts” of energy out of her hands.
