What Is The Plot Of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom?

Set in Chicago in 1924, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom follows the “Mother of the Blues” through her career as one of the first Afrian-American professional blues singers.

The story is told from the perspective of a single, high-tension recording session with Rainey and her backing band, including ambitious jazz horn player Levee. The story follows the band as they struggle to record their songs while fighting against a white recording studio’s attempts to control the music they make.

Based on a true story, and a play by August Wilson, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is also the late Chadwick Boseman’s last film, which he completed shortly before his tragic death earlier in the year.
