Warning: This article contains spoilers to Netflix’s Behind Her Eyes.
After its release on Netflix, Behind Her Eyes has earned praise from thousands of viewers all around Australia for its eerie likeliness to Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl and ode to mystery à la Nicole Kidman’s The Undoing.
While many of us are still making our way through the mind-blowing plot line of the psychological thriller, many have completed their binge-watch, making ‘#WTFthatending’ trending on Twitter—and right they are.
For those who don’t know—and probably shouldn’t be reading this article—Behind Her Eyes is based on Sarah Pinborough’s novel of the same name. The streaming giant’s newest release follows a single mother, Louise, who starts having an affair with a psychiatrist named David, who later ends up as her boss, and befriending a woman named Adele, who ends up being his wife.
Throughout the season, David and Louise continue their unfaithful relationship while her friendship with Adele only grows stronger. But after Adele gives Louise a journal written by her friend Rob—which she says will help Louise with her sleepwalking problem—things take a turn.
And while the story line alone is enough to have us scratching our heads in confusion, it’s the ending that has everyone talking.

What *Really* Happens At The End Of Netflix’s Behind Her Eyes?
In a shock twist that many never saw coming, the series ends with the death of Adele. Since her death, David married Louise who, wait for it, is actually Rob who has taken over Louise’s body.
The audience is shown how Louise actually died while she was in Adele’s body, as a result of an overdose during a fire, while Louise has been dead in Rob’s body for the entire time. Leaving Rob to take over Adele’s body for most of the season, meaning that, get ready for it, Louise is now Rob. Confused? Don’t worry, it only gets worse.
Going back in time, we learn that the real Adele met Rob as a 17-year-old and was momentarily institutionalised after her parents died in a fire at their estate. Adele explained to Rob that she blames herself for the tragic accident, because she had been mid-astral projection when it happened, meaning she couldn’t smell the smoke.
For those who are unfamiliar with the term astral projection, it is the process of separating your soul from your body while you’re asleep, leaving you to revisit places you’ve already been to.
Essentially, Adele teaches Rob how to astral project and he suggests that they temporarily swap bodies for fun. However, once they’ve switched, Rob kills Adele (who was in his body) with a heroin overdose and throws his body down a well.
When David arrives back at the estate, Adele/Rob tells him that Rob died from an overdose, leaving her to dispose of his body down the well. She adds that David’s watch, which she was wearing, also fell down there, implicating David in Rob’s death.
While David keeps Adele’s secret, he then meets Louise, taking us to the present-day events in the show’s first episode. However, When Adele/Rob discovers the new threat to their marriage, she devises a plan to steal Louise’s body by befriending and teaching Louise astral projection. After she “finds out” about David and Louise’s affair, she overdoses and sets her house on fire, knowing that Louise will astral project to get into the house to try and save her. But it’s then when Adele jumps into Louise’s body, forcing them to swap right in time for Adele’s body to die, ultimately killing Louise.
The show ends with the new Louise marrying David in order to have access to his enormous wealth that he inherits from Adele’s estate and leaves its audience completely and utterly confused.
