Millie Bobby Brown’s New Film Gives ‘Sherlock Holmes’ A Feminist Update

Meet Enola Holmes, your new favourite heroine

Millie Bobby Brown may be just 16-years-old, but she’s already racked up an acting career many in Hollywood would be envious of—from her breakout role in Stranger Things, for which she was nominated for an Emmy Award, to movie blockbusters like Godzilla: King of the Monsters. But, her latest role could be her best yet.

The actress is set to star in and produce Netflix movie, Enola Holmes, adapted from the six-book series by Nancy Springer (so, it has some serious franchise potential). While Sherlock Holmes has attracted some major names over the years—including Robert Downey Jr., Benedict Cumberbatch, and now Henry Cavill in Netflix’s most recent adaptation—it’s Brown who takes centre stage this time.

What Is The Plot Of Enola Holmes?

The show description reads: “On the morning of her 16th birthday, Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown) wakes to find that her mother has disappeared, leaving behind an odd assortment of gifts but no apparent clue as to where she’s gone or why. After a free-spirited childhood, Enola suddenly finds herself under the care of her brothers Sherlock and Mycroft, both set on sending her away to a finishing school for “proper” young ladies.”

Enola instead escapes to search for her mother, but her journey finds her entangled in a mystery surrounding a young runway where her she becomes a super-sleuth, outwitting her famous brother as she unravels a conspiracy that “threatens to set back the course of history.”

Who Is In The Cast Of Enola Holmes?

Along with Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown as the lead, Helena Bonham Carter is set to play Enola’s mother, while Sam Claflin and Cavill will play her two brothers.

Acclaimed director Henry Bradbeer, who was behind Killing Eve and Fleabag, will also be at the helm.

Speaking on the new project, he said: “It struck me as a fresh approach in a number of ways”, adding, “There was the fact that there was a sister that people probably hadn’t considered existed, and that automatically brings the whole feminist stance and a feminist angle on the Holmes story, which was particularly interesting to me, as Holmes was thought of as being someone who was a little bit of a misogynist.”

Where Can We Watch Enola Holmes?

As to when the film will be released, Netflix has released a short teaser, coupled with a strangely coded message that many have concluded—in a very Sherlock Holmes manner—to be the official release date.

Captioned with the words: “alone loshme reeebtpms wnettyrhitd”, the phrase may seem like pure gibberish at first glance. However, eagle-eyed fans have discovered that if you are to unscramble the letters of each word, it will spell out: “Enola Holmes September Twenty-Third,” which is presumably when Brown will make her Netflix return.

Looking for your next Millie Bobby Brown fix? You can catch the Enola Holmes on Netflix on September 23.
