The eyes of the world were on Meghan Markle over the weekend when she stepped out to attend the Wimbledon final with fellow Duchess, Kate Middleton.
The pair laughed and joked as they watched the nail-biting match between Meghan’s good friend, Serena Williams, and Angelique Kerber battle it out in the final.
And as she showed disappointment for her friend, Williams, who ultimately went down to Kerber, her father, Thomas Markle, says there’s more than meets the eye with Meghan’s pained expression.
“My thing about my daughter right now is that I think she is terrified. I see it in her eyes, I see it in her face and I see it in her smile,” the 73-year-old said during a new interview with The Sun on Sunday.
“I’ve seen her smile for years. I know her smile,” he continued. “I don’t like the one I’m seeing now. This one isn’t even a stage smile — this is a pained smile,” he said, adding that while it’s possible she “might be just having a couple bad days,” he worries “she’s under too much pressure.”
“There’s a high price to pay to be married to that family,” he added.
During the interview, Markle admitted that he hasn’t spoken with his daughter since the day after her wedding to Prince Harry on May 19.
“I spoke to Meghan and Harry briefly after the wedding,” he told the publication, adding that the number he has for her is no longer picking up.
“I sent a text to my palace contact saying I would like to reach my daughter and got no reply,” he continued.
“It is probably the longest time I have gone without speaking to her ever,” he explained, adding, “If I had one message for her it would be that I’m sorry for anything that went wrong.”
Something tells us that continually speaking to the press is not going to fix that situation – and as anyone who has been to a tennis match will know, your facial expressions tend to match the action on the court…
