With more than 16 million followers on Instagram, it’s an understatement to say that people are interested in Kayla Itsines’ life.
The personal trainer and fitness influencer first gained a following back in 2010, when she began posting pictures of her personal training client’s fitness progress on Instagram. Since then, Kayla has turned her talent for training women into a series of highly successful fitness guides, an app and an estimated $165 million net worth.
But Kayla’s followers aren’t just following her for her fitness tips—they’re also highly interested in her personal life, including the trainer’s upcoming wedding.
Kayla got engaged to her partner of two years, Jae Woodroffe in July 2022, just a few short months after learning they were expecting their first child together. The couple, who also share Arna, Kayla’s four-year-old daughter from her previous relationship, welcomed their son, Jax in January 2023.
With two children and highly successful careers, it’s at this point that most couples might start getting excited about planning their upcoming nuptials—but not these two. In fact, weddings just aren’t Kayla’s thing.
“I love Jae and Jae loves me and we want to get married,” Kayla tells marie claire Australia.
“But Jae hates weddings and I hate weddings. So, any chance we got—separately, before we even knew each other — we would try and get ourselves out of weddings.”
Of course, the tables have turned now that the couple are having a wedding of their own.
“The thought of us having a wedding, because we hate weddings so much, we were like ‘no one will come’ and they’re going to be thinking in their head ‘how do I get out of Kayla and Jay’s wedding’.”
When it comes to her own wedding, Kayla wants no part in planning the big day and is surprisingly comfortable placing her trust in the choices of other people.
‘So we, between [my public relations manager] Sara, my PA and my interior designer for my house, have literally gone: you guys organise it. I don’t want anything to do with it,” Kayla said.
“I don’t want to know colours, I don’t want to know themes, I don’t want to know anything. I’m just going to rock up and I’m going to get married.
“It’s so weird because I’m such a control freak with everything else. You tell me I’m running a FitHer bootcamp, I’m like ‘ok where’s the stage? Where’s the speakers? What is the music? Where are the mats? blah blah blah,’ but with the wedding I’m like nope, not for me.”
There are, however, a couple of details that Kayla has taken the reins on: her wedding dress and her rings.
“Those were the two things—and I did them in two seconds,” Kayla explains.
“I went in and obviously I went into lots of different stores, and they put me in all these amazing too-much wedding dresses and I just wanted simple.”
In the end, Kayla chose Melbourne-based designer Mariana Hardwick to design her wedding gown and remains convinced that “they’re the best people to work with.”
When it came to the rings, Kayla went with Cassandra Mamone, who designed the rings “single-handedly by herself.”
Also on Kayla’s radar is the upcoming FitHer Expo—Australia’s biggest women’s health and fitness exhibition. With her expertise and passion for women’s health and fitness, Kayla will be headlining the exhibition, alongside a line-up of Australia’s biggest fitness personalities, including Steph Claire Smith, Laura Henshaw and Chontel Duncan.
Until then, we’re looking forward to seeing how Kayla and Jae’s big day comes together—as we’re sure, are they.
Kayla Instines will be coming to Sydney for the FitHer exhibition on 7-8 October at the International Convention Centre. Register for tickets at FitHer.
