We’ve always known Jennifer Lawrence to be the down-to-earth and relatable celebrity who also cuts a very chic figure on the red carpet.
But the Hunger Games actress has gotten real about politics in her latest interview, revealing how Donald Trump’s presidency has “changed everything” for her.
In an episode of the Absolutely Not podcast, the Oscar-winning actress opened up about her conservative upbringing and how she grew to change her mind as she’s gotten older.
She even reflected on her first time voting with host Heather McMahan.
“I grew up Republican. My first time voting, I voted for Jon McCain. I was a little Republican,” she said.
While she does argue that her upbringing enabled her to see a positive side to the party, including the “fiscal benefits of some of the Republican policies”, she ultimately realised that “the social issues” weren’t “in line” with her personal views.
Lawrence, who raised in the conservative state of Kentucky, explained that what drove her to be more outspoken about politics was when Donald Trump was elected to power in 2016.
“This is an impeached president who’s broken many laws and has refused to condemn white supremacy, and it feels like there has been a line drawn in the sand. I don’t think it’s right… it just changed things for me,” she said.
“I don’t want to support a president who supports white supremacists.”
In another interview with V Magazine, the 30-year-old endorsed Democratic candidates Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, saying “Donald Trump has and will continue to put himself before the safety and well-being of America.”
She also encourages U.S. citizens to vote in the 2020 presidential election.
“Voting is the foundation of our democracy and our freedom,” she said, adding that she considers this upcoming election to be “the most consequential of our lifetime.”
