As the CEO and co-founder of Kic, a fitness app and network that prioritises feeling over appearance, Laura Henshaw knows a thing or two about setting realistic fitness goals to take into the new year.
“It’s completely normal for your motivation and energy to ebb and flow,” says Laura Henshaw of the pressure associated with the lofty fitness goals we’re all guilty of holding over ourselves each year.
The best way to reframe your mindset? “Listen to your body and know that rest is always an option.”
A well-lived life is not built by trying to be something you’re not, nor by punishing yourself for not being able to quit your vices – and then feeling guilty when you inevitably cave.
Whether you’re looking to focus on wellbeing, or you want to learn how to move in a way that benefits your body, soul and mind, there’s no better time to set realistic intentions that prioritise your health – however that may look.
Laura Henshaw’s Top Five Tips For A Healthy 2025
1. Discover Your “Why”
Finding your purpose is essential for the days you’re struggling with motivation.
Your “why” should have nothing to do with how you look. Instead, focus on the benefits that movement brings to your life: more energy, less stress, better sleep and more confidence.
2. Ditch The Diet
If you’re thinking, “Diet starts in January,” I get it, I’ve been there. But trust me, it’s not worth it.
Instead, try focusing on eating intuitively and listening to your hunger cues. Fuelling your body properly gives you the energy to show up as the best version of yourself in 2025.
3. Workout Your Way
Experiment with different workout styles. There are so many ways to move your body, it’s all about finding what works for you.
4. Let Go Of Self-Limiting Beliefs
Running is the purest example of this: 57 per cent of women stop running when they turn 15 due to self-image, confidence and their changing bodies.
Don’t let past experiences define you. You’ll be surprised by how capable you are.
5. Move To Suit Your Mood
Save higher intensity workouts for when you’re energised, and match your mood with some lighter intensity movements like Pilates, yoga or walking when you’re feeling a little “meh”. Remember, sweat doesn’t equal success.
