While 2024’s awards marked a record year at the box office, thanks largely to films by and for women, this year’s list is shaping up to be just as competitive with Wicked, The Substance and Anora all scoring multiple nominations across the 27 categories.

Nicole Kidman and Guy Pearce each received nods for their performances in Babygirl and The Brutalist – which are both yet to be released in Australia.

On the small screen, Naomi Watts and Cate Blanchett joined the Aussie chorus, going head to head in the ‘Best Performance by an Actress, Limited Series, Anthology Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television’ category for Feud: Capote vs. The Swans and Disclaimer.

The Biggest Shocks & Surprises From The 2025 Nominees List

Despite Wicked taking out four nominations for Best Picture, Cinematic Achievement, along with a Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress nod for its stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, the films director Jon M. Chu unexpectedly didn’t make the cut.

Another notable absence belonged to Saoirse Ronan, whose performance as a recovering alcoholic in The Outrun, and lead role in Apple TV’s wartime epic, Blitz, wasn’t enough to get her over the awards line.

Meanwhile, Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal and the film’s director Ridley Scott all missed out on nominations for Gladiator II.
