The hit US franchise is finally here to offer our local hopefuls a chance at finding their forever love – whether for the first time, or once again.

The show is scheduled for release later this year, with Sunrise presenter Samantha Armytage announced as the reality show’s host and personal guide for the contestant selected to take on the role of The Golden Bachelor.

While it’s only just been announced, we finally have an update on who will be taking the romantic lead on Australia’s version of the beloved franchise, so read below for everything we know about Australia’s first Golden Bachelor – Barry ‘Bear’ Myrden.

Appearing on Today to talk about The Golden Bachelor Australia, including what audiences can expect from the wholesome franchise, Armytage spoke about its unique position in the world of reality TV.

“This is for people who are looking for love again. I kind of love that – these are people with life experience, and it’s totally fascinating.”

When the announcement was made back in October 2024, Armytage revealed that Channel Nine was still in the process of finding its silver fox. “What we’re looking for is a Golden Bachelor most likely in his sixties, and some ladies who will be in their 50s or 60s – we’ll work this out as we go, as we’re casting now.”

After what feels like the longest wait, we finally have our Golden Bachelor!

As reported by The Daily Mail, Barry ‘Bear’ Myrden will make his reality television debut as Australia’s first Golden Bachelor.

The ’50-something’ is an infrastructure engineer and keen sailor, and according to NetworkCanada, moved to Australia with his late wife in 1998.

Struck by tragedy when his wife passed away in 2011, Mryden raised their three boys: Charlie, Jack and Declan, aged between 17-21, on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, where he’s able to remain close to the ocean.

Handpicked to bring the latest dating franchise to life in Australia, Mryden will be given a second chance at finding love after loss.

Which, if sources are to be believed, will come as a relief for his children, who’ve reportedly been less than impressed with his recent dating endeavours. “Bear is always complaining that his boys are saying that he is bringing around the wrong kind of girls that are just too young and hot for him,’ one friend shared with The Daily Mail.

“We were always saying that he needs to be put on a show like MAFS, so seeing him up for The Bachelor role is no surprise.”

Who Will Be Joining The Golden Bachelor Cast?

Production is currently underway, which means we’ll hopefully be closer to finding out who his gorgeous suiters might be, but while the whole cast remains a mystery, we do have info on one of the potential love interests.

After a recent petition to cast her mother as the first Bachelorette over 60, media personality and podcast queen, Abbie Chatfield, has had her wish granted – well sort of.

Her mum, Laura, has reportedly been cast among the romantic hopefuls for this season of The Golden Bachelor, after behind-the-scenes images emerged that showed the glamourous mum in the throws of filming.

The rest of the cast are yet to be announced, but bar is high, so we can’t wait to see who’ll be named next.

The Golden Bachelor first premiered in the US in 2023, and was centred around providing a platform to older contestants who may have, through various reasons, been unlucky in love or in search of someone to spend their golden years with.

Its first bachelor, 72-year-old widower Gerry Turner proved to be a wildly popular casting choice, skyrocketing The Bachelor franchise into its most watched series to date.

Where Can I Watch The Series In Australia?

The Golden Bachelor is coming to Channel 9 in 2025, so will be available to watch free-to-air as soon as a release date has been announced.
