While you might not have had the opportunity to see Free Guy just yet given the lockdown situation in several Australian states, you’ve no doubt heard plenty about it via its lead star Ryan Reynolds (with a little help from his wife Blake Lively in their signature sarcastic fashion).
And now, before half of us have even seen the comedy action film, it’s set to get a second instalment. And guess who was on hand to reveal the glorious news…
Ryan Reynolds himself took to Twitter to announce the sequel to his new film, cheekily writing: “Aaaannnnd after 3 years messaging #FreeGuy as an original IP movie, Disney confirmed today they officially want a sequel. Woo hoo! #irony.”
His quip was in subtle reference to one of many reboots in the works by not only Disney but by many other network giants (hello, HBO’s Gossip Girl, Sex and The City and The CW’s The Powerpuff Girls)
Interestingly, the film is Disney’s first cinema-only release since the beginning of the pandemic, and given its success within days at the box office, its no wonder the entertainment giant is looking at adding to the itinerary.
Last week, Reynolds’ wife Blake Lively shared a cheeky promo of the new film herself, posting a picture of herself in a bikini on her Instagram story and writing: “Go see @freeguymovie this weekend or you’ll be bummed.”
And at the premiere of the film, we witnessed a rare joint red carpet appearance from the famed celebrity couple—one of the first since the beginning of the pandemic.
Blake looked stunning as ever in a pink Prabal Gurung dress featuring pink sequins and cut-outs.
WHAT WILL FREE GUY 2 BE ABOUT?
While a script is yet to be written for the second film, you can guarantee the second will delve into the same narrative format of the first.
If you haven’t seen the first, allow us to recap: Guy, a bank teller who discovers he’s a background player in a video game. He decides to become the hero of his his video game story and save his friends (also in the game) from deletion.
