You’ve probably heard about Feng Shui, the traditional Chinese practice that aims to use laws of spatial arrangement and orientation to direct the flow of energy where you need it.
Feng Shui can be applied to many areas in life and is most often talked about in relation to good interior design.
However, Feng Shui Master, Jane Langof says that it can also be applied to your fridge.
Why might you want to Feng Shui your fridge, we hear you ask?
“The kitchen is the heart of the home and applying Fridge Feng Shui can lead to several benefits including positive energy and balance, mindfulness and sustainable living and improved eating habits, all while saving you money and convenience along the way,” says Langof.
Jumping in with both feet, we asked Langof to share her best tips to accurately Feng Shui the fridge and bring the energy and vibrancy back to cooking in the kitchen.
1. Think Goldilocks
The best way to adopt Feng Shui in your fridge is by approaching it like goldilocks – trying to strike the perfect balance between two much and too little.
The fridge should never feel too cluttered, nor too bare, in order to enhance positive Qi.
“Balanced Qi is said to have many impacts on both our mental and physical health including reducing stress and increasing immunity,” says Langof.
Her tip? If you can open your fridge without feeling overwhelmed or empty, you’re doing something right.
2. Order Items Based On Usage
The principles of Feng Shui tell us that the entrance to the home is the ‘mouth of Qi’, which is all about energy and opportunities.
The same goes for your fridge. Utilise space at the front of the fridge to store nutritious and nourishing foods that you want to reach for often.
Foods at the back of the fridge should be those we only use on occasion.
“You should also use this as an opportunity to remove any old or expired foods as these can create blockages in Qi,” says Langof.
3. Consider Grouping By Meal
Whether you’re ordering a ready packed meal kit like HelloFresh, or simply arranging your own meal prep, consider grouping your fridge items together to minimise wastage and spoilage.
Shelves should also be arranged to ensure the items you need are easily within reach.
4. Bring Peace To Your Fridge
Feng Shui is all about shapes and the movement of Qi through a space. Don’t create a big, stressful blockage at the front of the fridge by placing tall items in front of shorter ones.
We want to avoid blockages in the path of what we want to reach for. “Say goodbye to items falling or flying as you open the fridge door,” says Langof.
5. Consider What Is Actually In The Fridge
While organising can do a lot to improve Qi, it’s all about balancing the actual contents of your fridge.
“In Feng Shui, balancing the five elements – Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water – is key to supporting your health and wellbeing. Each element is associated with specific colours and shapes, which can be reflected in the foods we choose for our fridge,” says Langof.
She has shared an easy guide below:
- Wood: Green veggies such as beans or zucchini
- Fire: Red fruits such as apples, strawberries or even chilli
- Earth: Yellow or orange root vegetables such as carrots or sweet potatoes
- Metal: White and round objects represent this, so have rice and pantry staples like milk and eggs on hand
- Water: Blue fruits such as blueberries and blackberries
Make sure to get rid of spoiled and out of date food so your fresh is looking fresh and giving you inspiration and energy for many cooking nights to come.
