Euphoria quickly became one of the biggest culture touchstones of the recent decade. Joining the ranks of iconic teen shows such as Gossip Girl, Skins and the O.C, the show has gained popularity for its portrayal of its teenage characters, their friendships, love lives and various other complications. Then, of course, there’s the beauty looks, a euphoric vision brought to life by makeup artist Doni Davy.
When season two of the series aired at the beginning of 2022, it was safe to say that the show’s many viewers were already wondering when the next season would be released.
Euphoria creators didn’t waste any time confirming that a third season was on its way, posting a clip to the show’s official Instagram account that read: ‘#EUPHORIA has been renewed for season 3.’
Shortly after, Francesca Orsi, Vice President of HBO programming released a statement that read, “Sam, Zendaya, and the entire cast and crew of Euphoria have taken season two to extraordinary heights, challenging narrative convention and form, while maintaining its heart.
“We couldn’t be more honoured to work with this gifted, wildly talented team or more excited to continue our journey with them into season three.”
While we know that a season three is definitely on its way, when that day is, is another story. Fans have been painstakingly patient on news of Euphoria’s return and now it seems the show is finally underway. Below, everything we know about Euphoria season three
When Will Euphoria Season Three Be Released?
Inital reports slated Euphoria’s third season for a 2025 release, but that’s now starting to look unlikely.
This is due to the cast member’s other commitments, the writers’ and actors’ strikes in 2023, as well as the passing of cast member, Angus Cloud (Fez).
Earlier this year, Eric Dane who plays Cal Jacobs in the show, confirmed to Today With Hoda & Jenna that production was “looking at 2025” for a season three return.
Adding: “I’m optimistic that it’s going to come back. There’s a real appetite for that show out there, and it’s just too good to let go of.”
In a statement to The Independent on November 8, 2024, a HBO rep confirmed filming is due to commence, saying, “Euphoria is going into production in 2025. Nothing has changed.”
Not only was this recently confirmed by none other than Zendaya, but the actress revealed to Vanity Fair that “it’s set to start shooting in January.”
With filming only beginning in January of 2025, a release date in the same year could be a stretch. Fans will just have to wait and see.
Who Is In The Cast Of Euphoria Season Three?
It was originally assumed most of our favourite Euphoria cast members would be returning for the third season, however recent revelations have said otherwise.
Much to fans relief, Zendaya has confirmed she is reprising her role as Rue, but revealed she’s unsure of what’s to come for her character, telling Vanity Fair: “I haven’t read anything yet, but I’m excited to see what everyone has been working on, and what the future looks like for Euphoria.“
Our core cast favourites have also been confirmed to return, including Hunter Schafer as Jules Vaughn, Maude Apatow as Lexi Howard, Sydney Sweeney as Cassie Howard, Alexa Demie as Maddy Perez, and Jacob Elordi as Nate Jacobs.
Sadly, Angus Cloud’s passing means that we won’t see Fez in the upcoming season.
Javon Walton, who plays Ashtray, and Barbie Ferreira, who plays Kat, also won’t be part of the upcoming season. Barbie announced the news on her Instagram story, where she wrote
“After four years of getting to embody the most special and enigmatic character Kat, I’m having to say a very teary-eyed goodbye,” she wrote.
“I hope many of you could see yourself in her like I did and that she brought you joy to see her journey into the character she is today. I put all my care and love into her and I hope you guys could feel it. Love you Katherine Hernandez.”
Sadly, despite initial reports she would be returning, Storm Reid, who plays Rue’s little sister Gia, has revealed she’s not appearing in Euphoria season three.
“I’m very excited for Season 3, [but] unfortunately, Gia’s not returning to the third season,” she told Rotten Tomatoes at the Governors Awards on November 17.
“Euphoria’s a really special thing, and I’m so glad that that’s a part of my legacy and that I was a part of such a cultural phenomenon. I’m forever grateful, forever indebted.”
What Is The Plot Of Euphoria Season Three?
At this stage, we don’t know what the plot of season three will be. However, considering that the end of season two saw Maddy and Cassie have a major blow out, Rue get sober and Ashtray gunned down by police in a shoot out, we’re expecting big plot developments from the third season. Then, there’s speculation about whether season three will take a big leap forward in time—it certianly would help bridge the big gap in filming.
Euphoria costume designer Heidi Biven also previously teased that a five-year time jump could be incorporated into the upcoming season. “I’m really excited to read the scripts. There is talk of it being approximately five years in the future and that they’re not in high school anymore,” Biven told Vogue.
Following season two’s finale Zendaya also opened up to The Hollywood Reporter about the possibility of a time jump.
“I think it’ll be exciting to explore the characters out of high school. I want to see what Rue looks like in her sobriety journey, how chaotic that might look,” she told the publication.
All we do know so far is that Euphoria director, Sam Levinson sees the upcoming season as a “film noir,” where he will “explore what it means to be an individual with principles in a corrupt world,” through the eyes of Rue. Stay tuned.
