Troye Sivan: So Much Of My Life Has Been In The Orbit Of Incredible Women

"The relationship between a gay boy and the girls is very special."

Over the past year, pop music collaborations became a surprising, heart warming trend. While some may occasionally cut and compare the world’s biggest popstars—such as, Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, Olivia Rodrigo, Chappell Roan—together, they continued, time and again, to actively uplift and support each other. And one duo stood above the rest in their mutual (contagious) affection: Charli XCX and Troye Sivan.

When their respective tours—XCX’s Brat tour and Sivan’s Something To Give Each Other—collided in the US, XCX and Sivan joined forces to create the Sweat Tour. On stage, the two gyrated their way into the hearts of fans. Off stage, their friendship really flourished with backstage antics and viral behind-the-scenes TikToks. Whatever they did, their love for the other seemed genuine—and fans relished feeling like they were part of their (very cool) coupling. XCX and Sivan’s tour, which also variably looped in Lorde, Kesha, Tate McRae, Saweetie and Addison Rae, proved that there isn’t limited room at the top. And whenever you’re succeeding, it’s your right—nay, your honour—to share the love with your pals. And Sivan is more than happy for his girls to have their time to shine.

“So much of my life has been me existing in orbit of incredible women,” Troye tells me when we sit down for an interview ahead of his final tour stop in Sydney. “Whether it’s my sister or my mum growing up, or my best friends Kayla and Kerri, I think the relationship between a gay boy and the girls is very, very, very special.”

“And it’s kind of followed me into my work life where it’s like, me and Lily (Rose Depp) on The Idol, or Ariana and I over the years, or, now, me and Charli—I feel so lucky to be around these absolute powerhouses of inspiration,” he continued. “They’re just endless inspiration for me. It’s something I feel really, really comforted by and super inspired by. I love being around incredibly talented, smart women.”

When I ask Troye, who would be his dream collaboration, he said Janet Jackson—an on-brand choice for someone who loves ‘the girls’, and is a dance music icon (a reputation that currently has him acting as Smirnoff’s ‘Chief Vibes Officer’).

Recently, Troye was nominated for a Grammy for Best Dance Pop Recording alongside many of the aforementioned women (including his close pals, Ari and Charli). The only man in the field, Troye took to TikTok to respond. In the clip, Troye pointed to the nominees list while lip syncing to a voice grab. “Why would a man be there?!” the voice exclaimed, as Troye acted. Over the clip was the phrase: “I LOVE WOMENNNNNN”.
