Netflix’s latest hit, The Royals, may have just been released, but it’s already made it onto the team’s must-watch list – and for good reason. Its Bridgerton-meets-Bollywood setting belies a plot thick with intrigue, scandal and enough spice to keep us coming back for more. And with a cliffhanger finale that has fans spiralling, it’s no surprise the number one question viewers are asking is: Will there be a season two for The Royals?

Described by Netflix as a “breezy rom-com served up with a side of dreamy palace life, under the blazing royal sun,” the series is “a story about love, longing, and the complicated choices we make when our hearts and destinies collide.”

While Netflix hasn’t given us the royal decree just yet, that hasn’t stopped us from the noble pursuit of investigating how long we’ll have to wait to get our next glamorous hit.

Below, everything we know about The Royals season two, and the enemies-to-lovers tale taking over our algorithms – and group chats.

What Is The Royals About?

For anyone who’s yet to discover the deliciously bingeable new series, The Royals is a fictional look into the modern-day lives of an Indian royal family grappling with the complexities of tradition and power in a contemporary setting.

Directed by Priyanka Ghose and Nupur Asthana, and brought to life by creators Rangita and Ishita Pritish Nandy, the show centres around the tantalisingly tension-filled tale of Sophia Shekar (played by Bhumi Pednekar) and Prince to the royal throne of Morpur, Aviraaj Singh (played by The Perfect Couple’s Ishaan Khatter).

Shocked to discover his newly-instated title of Prince doesn’t come with an inheritance to match, the nonchalant monarch is thrust into a world of growing responsibilities – and mounting debt – with no blueprint to help him navigate his way out.

Enter Sophia Shekhar, a feisty, opinionated and unapologetically ambitious hospitality CEO, whose clashing presence promises to flip the script on preconceived notions of privilege and power.

When the two are forced to strike up an alliance in the hopes of transforming Morpur’s struggling haveli (palace) into a profitable luxury B&B, the unlikely partnership evolves into something more.

“With The Royals, we’ve mounted a romance that whips together the old-world charm of palaces and Indian royalty with glass-walled boardrooms and modern reality – where love is anything but easy,” shared creators Rangita and Ishita Pritish Nandy.

“The series is about two people from completely different worlds, each fighting their own battles, constantly at odds, yet irresistibly drawn to each other in ways they never expected—remember how you never want the good one but always chase after the one you know is trouble?—that’s The Royals for you.”

Are We Getting The Royals Season Two?

Almost as soon as we finished all eight episodes of The Royals, we were pondering how long it would take for Netflix to announce season two – and we know we’re not the only ones.

If the streaming giant greenlights the next instalment (which we’re betting it will), expect even more scandal, political chess-playing, and tension between duty and desire: and of course, plenty more off-shirt action from Ishaan Khatter.

And, if interview comments by the show’s star, Khatter, are anything to go by, the next chapter might be closer than we think. During the promotional tour for season one, Khatter responded to the cast’s playful comments about his character’s recreational habits, after suggesting that the only thing he hasn’t done is “exit from a helicopter.”

“I would do that in season two,” the actor replied, cheekily.

So how likely are we to see a season two make its way onto screens in the near future? “I’m still going to be living in the palaces of India,” co-creator Rangita Pritish Nandy told Variety of the possibilities in the pipeline. “There’s nothing as beautiful as India. I think we haven’t told enough Indian stories set in India. We are always running off abroad somewhere, and there’s a lot to be told over here.”
