We’re Hooked On “The Road Trip”, Here’s 7 Reasons Why

The new Paramount+ series has us dreaming of a Spanish summer love

Whether you’re in need of a summer romance or just a perpetual sucker for a quintessential chick flick, we have just the thing for you. The Road Trip is a new binge-worthy Paramount+ series adapted from the novel by bestselling author Beth O’Leary – who also wrote The Flatshare

According to the show’s plot synopsis, “Addie (Emma Appleton) and her sister Deb (Isabella Laughland) are on a road trip to a friend’s wedding in Spain when they are forced to offer a ride to Addie’s ex Dylan (Laurie Davidson), his irrepressible best friend Marcus, and complete stranger Rodney. With nowhere to hide but a creaky campervan, the group must confront their buried history as secrets and revelations cause many a bump in the road.”

Rediscovering romance, confronting the past, and finding healing in unexpected places are aplenty in this emotionally complex romantic comedy about giving love another shot. Can someone be the right person, just at the wrong time? And is there ever a future in returning to a past love?

With Paramount+ on and a chilled glass of rosé in hand, here are seven thoughts we had while watching the first episode.

1. We’re dying for a holiday

Oh, to be cruising down the Spanish coast, a warm European breeze gently blowing through the window, lightly tousling our hair. An urge to jet off to the Mediterranean has well and truly taken over us. We’re excited to get whisked away with this summer rom com.

2. We need to take a leaf out of Deb’s book

As Addie’s sister Deb says: “Be selfish for once, you don’t have to be a good person all the time.” In a society where the need to accommodate the feelings of friends, family, colleagues and romantic partners can feel oppressive, sometimes you have to put yourself first. The people pleasers amongst us need a mantra like Deb’s: if something doesn’t make you happy, simply don’t do it. Cheers to boundaries!

3. Brutally honest female relationships are the best

There’s a fundamental commonality in all close female friendships: the ability to be brutal. If a friend can be openly honest and put us in our place when we need it, then we know they love us. It’s truly a trait to be cherished.

4. The concept of seeing an ex: terrifying, or exciting?

Addie and Dylan being crammed into a minivan with three other people is clearly awkward for them both. You can feel the tension emanating through the screen. As uncomfortable as it is, it’s also quite sexy.

5. Posh boys are the worst

This is coming from someone who went through a strict phase of “only dating boys who wear signet rings.” Marcus repeatedly says “mate” in a way that screams “I went to a private school,” drives, and crashes, a yellow Porsche. Guess that’s karma?

6. It’s hot girl summer, baby

As Addie said, it’s hot girl summer, baby. And for Addie no amount of cleaning, washing or tidying up after other people as the holiday housekeeper was going to get in the way of that. This is our mantra for the rest of the sunny days ahead; one to remember particularly when our flatmates leave the place in a mess.

7. We cannot wait to watch the second episode

We’re hooked! We’re dying to know what really happened between Addie and Dylan, what resentments are still being harboured, and what will happen between them in the future. Fortunately, all episodes are now available only on Paramount+, so we’re excited to have this love story all summer long…
