Following on from their Gladiator II success, Paul Mescal looked to be set to follow Scott to his next film, however scheduling clashes with the upcoming Beatles movie have led to the actor dropping out.

Not to fret, because another beloved Hollywood heartthrob was immediately tapped to take his place. Here’s everything we know about The Dog Stars film, so far.

Who Is Cast In The Dog Stars?

Despite initial speculation that Mescal will star in the film, Scott let slip that clashing schedules saw the need to take a different direction.

“Yes. Maybe. Paul is actually stacked up, doing the Beatles next. So I may have to let him go,” he revealed.

Luckily for Jacob Elordi fans, it led to the Aussie actor being tapped for the story’s protagonist, Hig, a pilot who lives in an abandoned airport with his dog Jasper.

The latest A-lister to reportedly join the cast is Margaret Qualley. Fresh from her success in award-winning film, The Substance, opposite Demi Moore, Qualley is set to play Cima, a young doctor and daughter to a rancher who will be played by Guy Pearce.

What Is The Plot Of The Dog Stars?

The dystopian novel is set in the flu-pandemic ravaged world of the near future and follows former pilot, Hig, who now lives in an abandoned air base in Colorado.

The novel’s synopsis reads: “Hig’s wife is gone, his friends are dead, and he lives in the hangar of a small abandoned airport with his dog, Jasper, and a mercurial, gun-toting misanthrope named Bangley.”

It continues: “But when a random transmission beams through the radio of his 1956 Cessna, the voice ignites a hope deep inside him that a better life exists outside their tightly controlled perimeter. Risking everything, he flies past his point of no return and follows its static-broken trail, only to find something that is both better and worse than anything he could ever hope for.”
