Our favourite Gossip Girl, Leighton Meester, has just been announced as the newest cast member to join Apple TV+ period drama The Buccaneers.
The news was announced in an on-set video shared by the steaming platform on October 1st, where the cast are seen swapping scandalised expressions before opening the door to Leighton’s character.
Season one starred Kristine Frøseth, Alisha Boe, Josie Totah, Aubri Ibrag and Imogen Waterhouse as the buccaneers, with Christina Hendricks as Mrs. St. George and Mia Threapleton as Honoria Marable.
The irreverent series is based on an unfinished novel by Edith Wharton and follows a group of American girls as they attempt to navigate the social scene of 1870s London. A wild ride of debauchery and deception ensues as the girls fight for their right to exist within the class structures of high-society England.
What Can We Expect From Season Two?
The lavish period drama will pick up from where the girls left off – following their hearts and staying true to themselves in the land of the stiff upper lip. And as per the official synopsis, we know their paths are far from forged.
“In the first season of The Buccaneers, a group of fun-loving young American girls exploded into the tightly corseted London of the 1870s…setting hearts racing and kicking off an Anglo-American culture clash. Now the Buccaneers are no longer the invaders – England is their home. In fact they’re practically running the place. Nan (Frøseth) is the Duchess of Tintagel, the most influential woman in the country. Conchita (Boe) is Lady Brightlingsea, heroine to a wave of young American heiresses. And Jinnyn (Waterhouse) is on every front-page, wanted for the kidnap of her unborn child.”
“All of the girls have been forced to grow up and now have to fight to be heard, as they wrestle with romance, lust, jealousy, births and deaths… themes consuming all women of any age, no matter what year it is. Last time we got a taste of England. This time we’re in for a veritable feast.”
Katherine Jakeways will step back into the creator seat for season two, sharing her excitement at being able to continue on with such a vibrant narrative: “We know season one left audiences desperate to know what’s next for our buccaneers, so I’m absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to explore the further adventures of this smart, joyful, messy sisterhood.”
While details around season two’s release date are yet to be announced, at least we know the show is well into production.
