The internet is rife with speculation

Whether it be a toxic entanglement, an ex you can’t shake or a breakup that came without closure, some relationships continue to haunt us long after they’ve ended. Perhaps that’s why Tell Me Lies has the internet in such a chokehold.

If you don’t relate to the former, it may just be the gripping drama and sheer disbelief that Lucy continues to pine for the walking-red-flag that is her ex, Stephen.

For the uninitiated, Tell Me Lies centres on the toxic relationship between Lucy and Stephen that takes place over eight years, from their first meeting at university to the wedding of their close friends years later. There are affairs with teachers, car accidents covered up, an abundance of secrets and, of course, lies.

This season has truly taken the drama to the next level, so let’s unpack the theories and what we know about season three.

Tell Me Lies: The Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf Theory

In episode seven, we see Lucy and Bree attend Marianne and Oliver’s Christmas party. In the kitchen, Marianne reveals hosting the party is her “favourite tradition of the year” before making reference to the 1962 play.

“Reminds me of graduate school, or Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf,” she says before raising a glass of champagne.

Why are fans dissecting this seemingly insignificant interaction? Because it may not be fleeting at all, instead a reference to Marianne knowing Bree is sleeping with her husband. In Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf, two college professors who are also married invite a young student couple over for dinner, but as the night progresses their dysfunctional relationship is laid bare. A little too close to home, don’t you think?

Not only has it alerted fans to the high possibility Marianne knows about Bree, but some have theorised that they become a thruple of sorts in the future.

Looking back to episode six, we saw Bree on the phone to someone we originally presumed to be Oliver, but now some believe it also could have been Marianne. Following Oliver and Bree’s romp in the laundry at the party, a question of whether she will fall pregnant and give the child up to Oliver and Marianne is also being thrown around by fans. Wild.

“Listen to me, I am getting married tomorrow. I have a chance to be happy, okay? Like genuinely happy,” she says into the phone. “This is my chance to have a family, to live a life that I don’t feel like a visitor in. So please just leave me alone, I want to feel like a good person again.”

That’s a lot to unpack with just the finale to go.

Will There Be A Season Three Of Tell Me Lies?

We’re already wondering if there will be a season three of Tell Me Lies. It is yet to be confirmed, however all signs point to yes.

The show has deviated from the book in that Stephen doesn’t end up with Lucy’s best friend Lydia, in fact, Lydia isn’t in the book at all, so the backstory of how the two got together is still to be explored.

We also have the complex situation between Bree and Oliver (and Marianne?) to play out, as well as a resolution between Lucy and Stephen and some kind of ramifications for Macy’s death in the car accident Stephen caused. Then, there’s Wriggley and his brother Drew’s relationship, the downfall of which Stephen also played a hand in–will he be exposed?
