When it comes to the greats of dramatic television programming, there are the classics that will always get a nod: The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, The Wire – for patient souls – and Real Housewives of Beverly Hills if you believe in the genius of Bravo. But in terms of more recent releases entering the cannon… there’s not much. That is except for Netflix’s Ozark, which hit the small screen in 2017.
Set in the Missouri Ozarks, the series concluded at the end of the fourth season in 2022, however online forums are still humming with analysis of the masterful plot twists and impressive cinematography. But mostly they rave (still) about Julia Garner’s chilling performance as Ruth Langmore.
While Ozark may have propelled Julia into mainstream discourse, and many a Reddit thread, she has always been exceptional at her craft. As marie claire Features Director Alexandra English discovered when she interviewed Garner for our 2025 January cover story.
Despite being warm and funny on set, and very outspoken about her love for Australians (“I have so many Australian friends and so many friends in Australia… I feel weirdly at home there.”), Garner isn’t afraid to go to the dark side for a role.
Her latest film Wolfman (which will release to cinemas locally from January 16th) demonstrates the ease with which Garner can transform herself, and get under her characters’ skins. The aim of her ‘process’, as she shares, is to get to actually go more than skin-deep, and instead feel people she plays “in her bones”.
To read more about exactly how Julia Garner continues to evolve as an actress, and discover the sentimental family connection she had to the location of the marie claire cover shoot, be sure to pick up a copy of the January issue, on sale Thursday 19th of December.
