Saltburn and Promising Young Woman director, Emerald Fennell’s next film will be an adaptation of Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights.
The Academy Award-winning director announced the news on X, where she posted an illustration of two skeletons with the title Wuthering Heights in the middle and “A Film By Emerald Fennell” underneath.
Since her directorial debut, Promising Young Woman, Fennell has garnered a reputation as a feminist filmmaker known for her new and sometimes divisive takes.
With Wuthering Heights, it looks like Fennell might be following in the footsteps of filmmakers adapting classic novels, like Greta Gerwig, who adapted Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women in 2019.
Like Gerwig’s Little Women adaption, which ended with a feminist twist, we’re looking forward to seeing Emily Bronte’s classic gothic love story getting the Emerald Fennell treatment.
It themes, which include passion, revenge, and gender roles, certainty fit Fennell’s style.
What Is Wuthering Heights About?
Wuthering Heights was published by Emily Bronte under the pseudonym Ellis Bell in 1847.
The story is famously set on the Yorkshire moors and follows the intense relationship between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, an orphan who is taken in by Catherine’s family.
