Prepare for character-shaking surprises and polarising reactions
Lord John Grey Outlander Season 7 Part 2@outlander_starz

When marie claire sat down with Lord John Grey’s David Berry, episode two of Outlander season 7 part 2 had just aired, and without sharing any spoilers, it was a big one for the actor and character alike. But as Berry revealed more about what fans can expect from the Outlander season 7 ending, it looks like we’re in for a wild ride.

Lord John Grey is widely regarded as one of the most complex characters in the Outlander universe. Unlike many of the show’s characters who exhibit more black-and-white moral compasses, Grey navigates a nuanced web of obligations and personal beliefs that don’t always align.

As actor David Berry explains, this depth and ambiguity is part of what makes the character so compelling to inhabit on screen. And nowhere has this complexity been tested more, than in the second half of Outlander’s seventh season.

While Berry says he’s excited for audiences to be part of Lord Grey’s story arc this season, he’s also wary of the backlash his character (and by extension, Berry himself) might receive.

For anyone who’s all caught up on the episodes so far, we’re not even talking about what’s transpired already – which is certainly saying something about the episodes to come.

“Will people still like me – and my character – a couple of weeks from now?” he asks, adding “we’ll just have to wait and see.”

“One thing I will say is, that while I’d like to think Lord Grey’s intentions are true, he’s certainly going to upset a few people,” Berry reveals.

“A few important people that Lord John loves, and maybe even David Berry loves, you know… maybe my mum won’t even like me anymore after this season?”

“There’s a lot going on for Lord Grey and he’s living in a really tough time” says Berry, before pre-emptively begging forgiveness for what’s to come.

We honestly didn’t think it could get harder for Lord Grey, after all, he’s just lost the love of his life, married – and consummated – his great love’s soulmate, and, as Berry reveals, still “has a lot more story to tell”.

“People are going to be shocked by this season. There’s still a lot to unpack, and with a war on the horizon, we might see Grey change even further.”

Why Does Claire Fraser Marry Lord John?

In a very on-brand move for Lord John Grey, once again, he’s had to put his own interests aside to protect those of his nearest and dearest (read: Jamie Fraser).

While many fans questioned Lord John’s intentions, it was clear from the outset that as soon as he learnt that Claire was destined to be hanged for treason, he was going to have to put aside his own grief to save what was left of Jamie’s legacy.

“Diana never keeps her characters in a stable place,” he says of the challenges encountered by his character.

“She’s always putting them through their strife and torture, making us believe people are dead… and you know, making people sleep with each other.

“Which obviously keeps life interesting, but Lord John has certainly been put through a lot.”

What Happens At The End Of Outlander Season 7?

According to Berry, fans are in for some character-shaking surprises and polarising reactions.

Lord John, he says, may have been putting himself last up until now, “but he’s got a lot more to say, and people are just going to have to deal with it, because there’s a lot more of his story to tell.”

By the time Outlander season 7 reaches its final ending, “there’s going to be a lot to unpack both with the Frasers and of course, William.”

Not to mention that amid all the personal drama and character dynamics, there’s still a very real war going on that we know – thanks to Claire – is about to reach its most significant stage.

“When you have those dramatic stakes, you know, Lord John’s going to stick around for those things,” says Berry.

“We might see him, you know, change a little bit further. Who knows with Diana’s books? People are going to be shocked by this season. And I guarantee there’s going to be a lot of shocks in store for season eight as well.”
