Is Cersei Actually Pregnant? An Investigation

Is the Queen lying about her pregnancy?

Faking a pregnancy, as we learnt from Justin and Hailey Bieber’s April Fool’s prank, doesn’t always go down well. Whether it’s with your fans (in the Biebers’ situation) or with your partner, which might just be the case for a certain functional queen, faking a baby isn’t exactly going to end well. Warning, Game Of Thrones spoilers ahead.

So when Game of Thrones’ Cersei Lannister revealed in season seven that she was pregnant with Jamie’s baby, we weren’t sure where this would go. Now, in episode one season eight we might just have more answers — or be more confused than ever.

During a post-coitel conversation with Euron Greyjoy, the Mad Queen was seen swigging red wine — a favourite pastime of hers, after he said he’d “put a Prince in your belly”. In season seven, Cersei notably abstained from wine after a conversation with Jamie and another with Tyrion where she revealed the pregnancy.

According to scripts obtained by Vanity Fair, Cersei confirms her pregnancy in a conversation with Jamie, despite most of the confirming happening via subtext. The script reads: “She nods, it’s true. [. . .] Her happiness is contagious. They get another chance at family. This time with no one standing in their way.”

However, it isn’t exactly a surprise that Cersei is back on the wine in season eight — those who watched the teaser trailer closely would have already picked up on the scene.

Knowing Cersei, we wouldn’t put it past her to be faking the pregnancy in order to get Jamie to stay. At least, that was before Jamie allowed Tyrion to escape Kings Landing and thus betraying Cersei. Now, knowing about the betrayal, has Cersei given up on faking the pregnancy?

Another interesting element to note is the prophecy by Maggy the witch which we saw in season five. The prophecy noted a younger, more beautiful queen would take her throne. Presumably this is Daenerys Targaryen. It also said Cersei would have three children and that all three would die before her. This doesn’t account for a fourth child, meaning the pregnancy has either been lost or was fake. And while the wine isn’t the most accurate descriptor (we’re not sure what sort of advice pregnant women would be given in a Game Of Thrones world, but we doubt it has much to do with stopping drinking wine), it does indicate that Cersei might be giving up the act on her pregnancy.

Oooh, season eight, there’s just so much to unpack!
