Who Will Play Britney Spears In Her Biopic? We Have Theories

It’s official: Britney Spears’ bestselling 2023 memoir, The Woman In Me, is being adapted for the big screen.

On August 1, Universal Pictures announced that it had secured the rights to adapt Spears’ memoir into a biopic, following a “highly competitive auction”. It has also been announced that the film will be produced by Marc Platt, who has previously worked on La La Land, and directed Jon M. Chu, who most recently worked on Wicked.

Immediately following the announcement, Spears posted on X: “Excited to share with my fans that I’ve been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt. He’s always made my favorite movies … stay tuned”

Spears tweeting about the project comes as a relief ,since her story has so often been told and controlled by other people. The memoir speaks about this in detail and recounts her life to date, including stories from her childhood and time spent as part of the Mickey Mouse Club. She also wrote candidly about her past relationships (most notably, her three-year romance with boy bander Justin Timberlake) and her time living under a conservatorship.

If you’ve listened to the audiobook for The Woman In Me, read by Academy Award-nominated actor Michelle Williams, you already know that the story comes to life beautifully. It’s heartfelt and at times haunting, and extremely powerful.

Upon the book’s release, Spears spoke about how personal the experience of writing her book was. “I poured my heart and soul into my memoir, and I am grateful to my fans and readers around the world for their unwavering support,” she said.

While details are limited right now, we can assume that the film is likely at least a year away (if not longer), but in the meantime, we’ll happily speculate on exactly who should play Spears and how the memoir will come to life for the big screen.

When Is The Britney Spears Biopic Coming Out In Australia?

There are currently no details for when the Britney Spears biopic will be released. For a film as highly anticipated as this one, though, we can only assume (and hope!) that it will land in Australian theatres on the same day as the rest of the world.

Who Will Play Britney Spears In The Woman In Me Biopic?

There is no word yet on who will play Spears in the biopic, or whether there will be multiple actors cast to play her at different ages. We (and the Internet) do have a few ideas though:

Tate McRae

Tate McRae has been one of the frontrunners in “who will play Britney” chat since the biopic was announced. This is in part due to her status as a triple threat (singer, songwriter, dancer), but there’s even more to the theory. McRae started her career at a similar age to Spears, as a contestant on So You Think You Can Dance, and regularly wears Britney-esque Y2K outfits on stage. It’s a match made in heaven.

Addison Rae

I think we all remember the time Addison Rae was tapped holding a copy of Britney Spear’s The Woman In Me memoir upon the book’s release, and it’s had eagle-eyed fans wondering whether she will embody the pop star in the biopic. It also doesn’t hurt that she has drawn comparisons to Spears over the years, that her latest pop single and bona fide bop “Diet Pepsi” has cemented per place as a pop music darling, or that her on-stage outfits and dance routines are reminiscent of a ’00s Britney. Plus, Julia Fox officially nominated her for the job via Twitter, so we can probably consider the case closed.

Emma Roberts

In late August, Emma Roberts’ name was thrown into the mix, courtesy of Spears’ former assistant, Felicia Culotta. She addressed the rumour on September 2. “I mean, it’s my true dream to play Britney Spears,” she told Cosmopolitan US. “It’s a rumour, but I hope maybe it’ll come true. I mean, I remember I locked myself in my room and listened to ‘In the Zone’ and said, “I cannot leave this room until I memorise every word.”

It’s virtually impossible to utter the word “pop star” without immediately thinking about Sabrina Carpenter in 2024.

Sydney Sweeney

We have no idea if Sydney Sweeney can sing like Britney, but we do know that she could embody the pop star with ease in this film.

Madelyn Cline

Some fans online are convinced that Madelyn Cline bears a striking resemblance to Spears, and have already set her among their dream casting.
