Anyone who has ever watched five minutes of Big Little Lies will attest to the fact that the ocean is just as integral to the show as any member of the “Monterey Five.” How many scenes are punctuated by the crashing waves and ominous shore break? Countless. The ocean is to BBL as New York was to Sex And The City.
As expected the first three episodes of HBO’s smash hit show was packed with drama as the women all tried to move on after Perry’s (Alexander Skarsgård) death.
Picking up months after Perry’s shocking death, the women are carrying on – even if in the most unlikely ways. Madeline Martha Mackenzie (Reese Witherspoon) is selling houses, stuffing her face with red velvet cupcakes and waring with her daughter over college; Celeste Wright (Nicole Kidman) is dealing with her mother-in-law (Meryl Streep as Mary Louise); Renata Klein (Laura Dern) is being Renata; Bonnie Carlson (Zoë Kravitz) is trying to escape the reality that she’s committed murder; and Jane Chapman (Shailene Woodley) is moving on… with new bangs?
Yet, there’s a theory circulating that will make all of us want to move far away from any body of water larger than a puddle — that somebody will drown in BLL.
1. Bonnie’s Mum Has A Vision
In episode two, Bonnie’s mum Elizabeth visits to help her daughter who is emotionally drowning in her grief.
Elizabeth tells Bonnie that she’s been having visions where “somebody’s drowning.”
There’s then the suggestion that this “somebody” might be Bonnie, as she continues with, “I see you drowning right now, in a way.”
2. The Fact That Bonnie Has Drowned Before
In episode three, Bonnie has a flashback which shows her younger self scared to put her head underwater in a pool. Then Elizabeth responds by brutally shoving her child’s head underwater. These shots are then mirrored against present-day Bonnie walking into the ocean fully-clothed and being submerged by the waves.
3. There’s Even More Talk Of Drowning
Back in episode two, Celeste tells Mary Louise that Madeline once saved Max from drowning. In episode 3, Celeste then calls back to this moment by saying “you would have jumped into that pool and pulled me out.”
