One film simply wasn’t Kenough. If rumours are to be beleived, a Barbie sequel could potentially be in the works. Cue the Dua Lipa dance track.
A cinematic and cultural phenomenon, Barbie, broke box office records with the highest debut from a female-directed film ever, pushed the definitions of press tour method dressing, tickled runways and our wardrobes pink and generally reminded us all of the power of womanhood.
So, is it surprising a Barbie 2 would be considered? Not at all. Let’s unpack whether there’s truth to the rumours.
Will There Be A Sequel To Barbie?
Reports on the legitimacy of a Barbie sequel are conflicting. According to The Hollywood Reporter, well-placed sources confirm Barbie creators Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach are in the “early stages” of developing the film’s sequel, having come up with an idea for the plot that has “opened the door for deal talk”.
On the other hand, Warner Bros. studio representatives have denied the rumours, telling the publication, “There is no legitimacy to this reporting.”
What Has Greta Gerwig Said About A Barbie Sequel?
If anyone can speak to the potential of a Barbie sequel it’s Greta Gerwig. Earlier this year the multihyphenate was honoured as one of Time’s Women of the Year, during the event she addressed the possibility of Barbie 2.
“My North Star is ‘What do I deeply love? What do I really care about? Like, ‘What’s the story underneath this story?’” she said. “And I think with ‘Barbie,’ the story underneath this story was I loved Barbie. I remember going to Toys R Us and looking at Barbies and I loved their hair. And I loved everything about them and my mom was not sure about it. And I find that’s the story, that’s the generational story…I’m always trying to find those undertows.”
She then added, neither confirming nor shutting down the idea: ““It’s something that I loved making so much. And I loved the world that we built so much and all of the actors and the idea of getting to be with that group of people again is very exciting.”
What Has Margot Robbie Said About A Barbie Sequel?
Barbie herself, Margot Robbie, who recently welcomed her first child is already busy working on several other big projects including Emerald Fenell’s adaptation of Wuthering Heights.
Aside from needing to find time in her busy schedule, Margot recently spoke about her hesitation in creating a sequel.
“I think we put everything into this one. We didn’t build it to be a trilogy or something,” Robbie told the Associated Press. “Greta put everything into this movie, so I can’t imagine what would be next.”
