Netflix’s The Crown has been a hit since its inception, largely due to all the drama the show spills about the royal family.
But with reports swirling that the latest season—depicting a young Princess Diana (played by Emma Corrin) navigating the monarchy—has upset the royal family, the actress has made a point of explaining why it’s not to be taken so seriously.
Stirring up old controversies and revealing new tidbits, season four of the show has had some mixed responses—with the depiction of Diana’s struggles with bulimia being a particular point of contention.
But peaking on The Tamron Hall Show, Corrin pointed out that, while it’s based on real-life people and events, the show is largely fiction.
“It’s a difficult one,” she said. “I think for everyone in The Crown, we always try and remind everyone that the series that we’re in is fictionalised to a great extent. Obviously, it has roots in reality and in some fact, but [show creator] Peter Morgan’s scripts are works of fiction.”
The 25-year-old Diana lookalike added that while she stands by her portrayal of the late Princess of Wales, she empathises with the family and fans. “I understand why people would be upset because this is history… With Diana, you know, it’s still very much fresh, I suppose. So I do really understand if people would be upset.”
She also assured that she and her fellow cast members don’t see the show as a biopic. “All of the cast, we just want to constantly remind people that we approach these people that we play as characters,” she said, adding that “it’s why it’s such a joyous job because Peter writes such rich and complex characters and as an actor it’s such a joy to really be able to bring a lot to them.”
The response comes after reports revealed Prince William was “none too pleased” about the way the show portrayed his parents.
“The Duke of Cambridge is none too pleased with it,” a source told The Daily Mail. “He feels that both his parents are being exploited and being presented in a false, simplistic way to make money.”
And though the intimate details about the royal family may be dramatised, one thing the show does try to replicate exactly? Princess Diana’s style.
