At the height of her career, Elle Macpherson was dubbed ‘The Body’ due to her supermodel proportions. The Australian business mogul has always been open about the hard work and discipline she puts in to maintain her shape, and now the 54-year-old is speaking candidly about how why she decided to overhaul her diet.
“I started to put on weight around my waist and hips, which was never my thing before. My legs started to get heavy. I started to feel lethargic. I also didn’t feel inspired. I wasn’t sleeping. My whole energy felt heavy,” Elle told New Beauty when discussing the changes she noticed after her milestone birthday.
The mother-of-two revealed that she decided to follow a new plant-based “alkaline” diet created by London uber-nutritionist Dr Simone Laubscher.
Advocates of an alkaline diet believe that avoiding acid promoting food such as sugar, coffee, dairy and refined carbs reduces inflammation in the digestive system leading to an overall improvement in health.
According to Dr. Laubscher, foods which “alkalise” the body include; kale, sprouts, spinach and other leafy greens feature prominently in the alkaline diet, along with ancient grains such as quinoa and amaranth, and healthy fats such as avocado, olive oil and coconut oil. While not intending to be a vegan diet, most animal-derived ingredients are off the menu.
“What I’d always thought were sunspots – actually, they were sugar spots – started to clear, and my skin looked tighter, dewier and plumper. I started to lose weight, probably because my sugar cravings had subsided. My digestion improved. I felt more emotionally balanced,” Elle shared.
Elle isn’t the only celebrity to speak out about the benefits of eating green, other famous plant-based foodies include; Liam Hemsworth, Miley Cyrus and Ellen Degeneres just to name a few!
