Australian singer Delta Goodrem has announced her engagement to boyfriend Matthew Copley. Goodrem, who is just about to embark on her Innocent Eyes anniversary tour in Australia, has been dating Copley since late 2017.
When sharing the news online, she captioned the post, “My best friend asked me to marry him.”
Alongside the caption was a carousel. The first image was a photo of the pair embracing at sunset in Malta. However, the next slide revealed even more. It was the most beautiful video of the proposal spot (which had violinists and scattered rose petals), alongside a zoom in on her ring, which is just stunning, can we say.
For those who didn’t already know, Copley is actually a member of Goodrem’s band, and the pair have been in Europe not for travel, but for tour! Together they have performed in the UK and Europe throughout 2023.
She opened up about the engagement in an interview with news.com.au.
“[Matthew’s] family is from Malta, so it was beautiful and special. It was a beautiful party,” Goodrem explained.
“We’d been in the thick of touring, doing shows and festivals, so no,” she added when asked if she would be headed back to Europe anytime soon.
“When you’re in the right place, it’s just easy,” she explained of their romance. “We’re both in the same place in terms of how we feel about that. We are obviously a team when it comes to music and creating – that’s how we met and it continues.”
She added that there’s a “clear line” about how much of their life she chooses to share online. The pair have been consciously quiet about their romance over the years.
“I made a choice that I’m not even going to comment ‘yes’ or ‘no’ … I’ve said nothing for three or four years,” she told The Daily Telegraph. “He’s my guitarist, I met him through music.”
She told The Australian Women’s Weekly, “It’s incredible to be on stage with him because he’s so talented. We really are a team. He’s my best friend, he’s kind and just a beautiful human being.
“I’m very lucky. It’s all very natural and I think that comes from a beautiful respect and love. I feel so grateful.”
Goodrem’s engagement with Copley comes after the star dated a series of famous boyfriends including singers Nick Jonas, Brian McFadden and tennis player Mark Philippoussis.
While Copley does work with Goodrem in her band, he also has his own music project ‘Sons of Midnight’, which has toured alongside Simple Plan and Avril Lavigne.
