It seems laughing at 2020 has become the new way to cope with 2020.
In a year that has felt like a twisted episode of Black Mirror, it’s only fitting that Netflix should tap the show’s creators for a ‘mockumentary’ poking fun at some of the more outlandish events of the year.
Here’s everything we know about the upcoming comedy, aptly named Death to 2020, including its star-studded cast.
What is the plot of Death To 2020?
Presenting like a typical documentary, the spoof will juxtapose footage of real-life events with ‘renowned experts’ acting as talking heads, providing commentary on what took place.
“2020: A year so [insert adjective of choice here], even the creators of Black Mirror couldn’t make it up… but that doesn’t mean they don’t have a little something to add. Death To 2020 is a comedy event that tells the story of the dreadful year that was — and perhaps still is? This landmark documentary-style special weaves together some of the world’s most (fictitious) renowned voices with real-life archival footage spanning the past 12 months,” says the official blurb.
The show’s creator, Charlie Brooker (co-creator of Black Mirror) is known for his BBC series Annual Wipe, which was a dark comedy looking back a the news and cultural moments of the year. Running from 2006-2016, it only came to a halt recently when Brooker became preoccupied with other projects, namely, Black Mirror and is said to be the inspiration for Death To 2020—a uniquely terrible year, if we do say so ourselves.
Who will be in Death To 2020?
Boasting an A-list cast, the comedy is set to feature Lisa Kudrow (Friends), Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction), Hugh Grant (The Undoing), Leslie Jones (Ghostbusters, SNL), Joe Keery (Stranger Things), Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley, The Lovebirds), Tracey Ullman (Mrs. America, Bullets Over Broadway), Cristin Milioti (How I Met Your Mother, Palm Springs) and Samson Kayo (Truth Seekers).
During an interview for his new series, The Undoing, Grant let it slip that he will be playing a “repellent” historian (whatever that means) and confirmed that he will be wearing a wig.
