Crazy Rich Asians has just come to our screens, and unsurprisingly it is set to be the film of the year.
The Asian representation (the first all-Asian cast in a major studio film in 25 years), the strong female leads, the food porn (do not watch this film without snacks), and of course the fashion (we’re talking Elie Saab, Dior, custom-made Michael Cinco and Carven Ong).
Essentially, it’s a must-see, but what are we going to do once we’ve seen it? Sure there’s a sequel in the works, but considering the reports that filming is only now about to start, we’ve got some time to wait.
Well, luckily for everyone, there’s a Crazy Rich Asians-inspired TV show in the works to satisfy all of our withdrawal symptoms.
The show? Lazy Rich Asians – see what they did there? But that’s only the pitched name so we’ll have to see what they eventually decide on later.
The show, currently being developed on ABC, is the work of Emmy award winning writer, Jessica Gao, who will also executive produce the project, alongside Brian Grazer, Francie Calfo and Samie Kim Falvey.
But while Lazy Rich Asians seems to be inspired by Crazy Rich Asians, the story is definitely not a continuation.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the single-camera project, ‘revolves around Janet Zhao, a first-generation Chinese-American woman who struggles to set healthy boundaries with her crazy, exhausting family. When her wealthy grandmother dies and names Janet the sole inheritor, she suddenly finds herself the unwilling new matriarch of the family she’s spent her life trying to keep at arm’s length.’
Yes, it sounds incredible.
If you’ll excuse us, we’re off to count down the days.
