This “Traumatic” Deleted Scene From ‘Game of Thrones’ Proves A Major Theory Wrong

"It was a really traumatic, great moment for Cersei"

During the final season of Game of Thrones, fans (including us right here) speculated non-stop about whether Lena Headey’s character, Cersei Lannister, was actually pregnant or whether is was another of her evil manipulations; She used her pregnancy to play both her brother/lover, Jamie, and Euron Greyjoy, after all.

But today Headey confirmed that despite lying and manipulating her way through eight seasons, Cersei was in fact with child. In an appearance at a comic book convention in Munich, Germany, Headey said that Cersei was originally supposed to lose the baby in season seven, but that directors ended up cutting the scene.

“We shot a scene that never made it into season seven, which was where I lose the baby. And it was a really traumatic, great moment for Cersei, and it never made it in,” she said.

“And I kind of loved doing that because I thought it would have served her differently,” the actress continued, likely meaning fans of the series would have sympathised with her character and that it would have shown Cersei’s softer side, which we saw glimpses of in earlier seasons (usually when her children were involved).

Another interesting element to note is the prophecy by Maggy the witch which we saw in season five, saying that Cersei would have three children and that all three would die before her. This doesn’t account for a fourth child, meaning directors of the show always meant for Cersei to lose her child – whether it be by miscarraige in season seven, or being crushed to death in season eight.

Earlier this week, Headey opened up about the way her character died, saying she wished Cersei had gone a “better” way. “I will say I wanted a better death,” she told The Guardian. “Obviously you dream of your death. You could go in any way on that show. So I was kind of gutted. But I just think they couldn’t have pleased everyone. No matter what they did, I think there was going to be some big comedown from the climb.”
