We’ll admit, we’ve switched on the television before and found ourselves thinking it’s an entirely different celebrity before us. Anyone who watched Sex Education will likely tell you they did a double take at Emma Mackey’s character, thinking that Australian actress Margot Robbie did a startlingly real English accent.
Or, maybe you happened to catch an old episode of New Girl and found yourself wondering when Katy Perry started acting, only to realise it was Zooey Deschanel all along…
The point is, Hollywood is rife with lookalikes. So to save you any embarrassing misidentifications, we’ve compiled a list of every celebrity doppelganger. Below, the most famous celebrity duos.
Isla Fisher And Amy Adams
You’d be forgiven for mistaking Australian actress Isla Fisher with American actress Amy Adams. Although, Isla says she doesn’t see the resemblance — besides their red locks of course.
In an interview on The Project she revealed, “We laugh about it because Amy has blue eyes and I’ve got brown. Our husbands have laughed about it, too.”
Emma Mackey And Margot Robbie
When Emma Mackey burst onto our screens as Sex Education‘s Maeve Wiley, viewers had a hard time believing she wasn’t actually Margot Robbie. Though Mackey sports slightly darker hair, the two bear more than a passing resemblance. And now, it seems they might finally be playing into their uncanny similarities, with the pair set to appear alongside each other for the first time in the 2023 film, Barbie.
Zooey Deschanel And Katy Perry
Katy Perry said she’s used her doppelganger to her advantage, admitting she used to pretend to be Zooey Deschanel to get into clubs. Speaking to Deschanel in an Instagram live video, Perry said:
“When I came to L.A., I was pretty much a nobody, and you were just getting so huge at that time — it was like Zooey Deschanel ran the world. … In that moment, I was so complimented to look like you.”
The pair have also played into this similarity with Deschanel impersonating Perry in the video clip for her song, ‘Not the End of the World’.
Zoe Saldana And Thandi Newton
Zoe Saldana said that she and Thandi Newton look so alike that even her own mother can’t always tell them apart. In an appearance on The Late Late Show With James Corden, Saldana said “My mom still thinks that I’m in Westworld” — the hit series that Newton stars in.
“I’m like, ‘Mom, you did not give birth to Thandie Newton,’” Saldana laughed.
Mila Kunis And Sarah Hyland
Its no secret that Sarah Hyland and Mila Kunis look alike. Hyland first addressed their resemblance back in 2010, saying she was mistaken for doppelganger Kunis at the Golden Globe Awards.
“People go to up to her and say, ‘Hi. I love Modern Family. And she goes, ‘Thank you so much!’” Hyland shared.
“And so I’m like, ‘You pretend to be me. Can I pretend to be you?’” she joked.
Bryce Dallas Howard And Jessica Chastain
You’d be forgiven for thinking Bryce Dallas Howard and Jessica Chastain were related. Howard’s father has even made the mistake, with Chastain revealing he mistook her for his daughter back in 2019.
“I was, like, walking by, I was like, ‘Oh, that’s Ron Howard (Dallas’ father)’ ” Chastain recalled.
“And then my friend was with me (and) said [Ron] turned to someone, he goes, ‘I think I just saw Bryce.'”
Jennifer Garner And Hilary Swank
Jennifer Garner and Hillary Swank said their remarkable resemblance has sometimes made for uncomfortable fan encounters.
“People get angry at me because they think I’m just trying not to sign an autograph or take a picture,” Swank said in an appearance on Conan, per W Magazine. “They’ll be like, ‘Oh, God, I’m such a big fan, I loved you in Alias.‘”
After refusing a picture with one fan who had mistaken her for Garner, Swank said the fan called her a “b****”.
“And I didn’t want to give her a bad name, so I took a photo with them and maybe someone will say some day, ‘That’s not Jennifer Garner'”, Swank laughed.
Natalie Portman And Keira Knightley
Keira Knightley and Natalie Portman look so alike that Knightley actually played Portman’s double in the 1999 film, Star Wars: Phantom Menace.
Reflecting on the experience in an interview in 2020, Knightley admitted, “Our mums did actually confuse us on set”, per 80s Kids.
(Young) Millie Bobby Brown And (Young) Natalie Portman
While they booth look a little different these days, young Natalie Portman and Millie Bobby Brown certainly resembled each other. Adding to their likeness, both actresses shaved their heads for on-screen roles: Portman for V for Vendetta and Brown for Stranger Things.
Dax Shepard And Zach Braff
Dax Shepard and Zach Braff love to make light of their similarities. Back in 2019, when Shepard’s wife Kristen Bell shared a photo of them on a magazine cover, Zach commented, “We look cute here.”
Penelope Cruz And Salma Hayek
Proving that no one is immune to mistaking celebrity lookalikes, in 2014 the Academy posted a photo to Instagram of Robert De Nero and Penelope Cruz backstage at the Oscars, but mistakenly credited Cruz as Selma Hayek. Luckily, the post was swiftly deleted.
Michael Cera And Jesse Eisenberg
Michael Cera and Jess Eisenberg are no strangers to being mistaken for each other. Cera told the New York Post that it actually happens “once a day”.
Nina Dobrev And Victoria Justice
We’re still waiting for the day when actresses Nina Dobrev and Victoria Justice lend their stunning similarities to an on-screen role as sisters.
Selena Gomez And Lucy Hale
According to Lucy Hale, Selena Gomez isn’t the only celeb she looks similar to. Speaking to W Magazine, Hale said she “a mixture of Selena Gomez, Sarah Hyland, Mila Kunis and Maisie Williams.” We don’t disagree!
Rupert Grint And Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran and Rupert Grint definitely look like brothers, largely thanks to their ginger hair. But the resemblance is so uncanny that, in an appearance on The Late Late Show With James Corden, Grint said he gets mistaken for Sheeran 50% of the time.
“It’s kind of 50-50 now. It could go either way. I could be Ed, or I could be me.”
And it’s not just fans who make the mistake. According to Grint, British singer-songwriter Leo Sayer approached him, “and said he loved my music, of course thinking I was Ed.”
Susan Sarandon And Sigourney Weaver
Susan Sarandon made light of how frequently she and Sigourney Weaver are mistaken for each other when collecting an award at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards in London, Page Six reported.
“I want to just clarify a few things,” Sarandon began.
“Sigourney may have left the stage but we are two different people. I have taken credit for Alien many times and she’s signed autographs for me.”
