Safe to say, 2021 will officially be labelled the “Year of Britney” as the world’s fascination with the pop icon, her conservatorship, and the media’s mishandling of her as a young woman, continues to spark conversation. Following on from The New York Times Presents: Framing Britney Spears documentary released on Feb. 5, another Spears-focused project is reportedly on the horizon.
Netflix is working on its own Britney Spears documentary, reports Bloomberg. According to the outlet, the film was in the works prior to Hulu’s explosive documentary about the #FreeBritney movement and Spears’ conservatorship with father Jamie Spears.
Since Hulu’s documentary aired, those closest to Spears—from past and present—have spoken out in support of the pop icon, including boyfriend Sam Asghari and ex Justin Timberlake. It even inspired a Los Angeles Superior Court to rule a new judgment in Spears’ conservatorship. On Feb. 11, it was decided that Spears father will remain as co-conservator of his daughter’s estate alongside private wealth management firm, Bessemer Trust Company, despite the 39-year-old artist’s wishes.
The news comes as TMZ reported that Spears herself was working on a documentary, though considering the legalities of her conservatorship this seems doubtful.
Below, everything we know about Netflix’s Britney Spears documentary.
What Will Netflix’s Britney Spears Documentary Be About?
Details on the upcoming project are pretty scarce, with no release date or synopsis having been released. However, many believe the Netflix documentary could go into further detail about some of the areas of Spears’ life that were left out of the Framing Britney Spears doco. It could also explore the public reaction to the first documentary.
Who Is Involved In Netflix’s Britney Spears Documentary?
Several reports have linked filmmaker Erin Lee Carr to the upcoming project, and fittingly, Carr is no stranger to covering controversial subjects. The filmmaker has previously directed three successful documentaries for HBO, including Mommy Dead and Dearest about Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s murder of her mother Dee Dee; I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth v. Michelle Carter about the texting scandal that led to a teen’s suicide; and At the Heart of Gold: Inside the USA Gymnastics Scandal about Dr. Larry Nassar’s sexual abuse of Olympic gymnasts.
It remains unclear which of those close to Spears will make an appearance in the documentary, as well as Spears herself.
When Will Netflix’s Britney Spears Documentary Be Released In Australia?
No release date has been formally announced just yet, but fans could assume Netflix will want to release the documentary by the end of 2021.
