In 2007, we were blessed with the comedic genius that was Superbad. The film saw two awkward teens, played by Michael Cera and Jonah Hill, navigate through the difficult world of high school. Although that movie still sits as one of the most enlightening, hilarious and feel good films of a generation, you can’t help but wonder what it would be like if women were to occupy those roles. We finally have that answer.
Booksmart is Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut about two straightedge girls – Molly (Beanie Feldstein) and Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) who realise they no longer want to play by the rules when they find out they made it to the same colleges as the kids who partied all through high school. The two decide to make up for it by going all out right before graduation, and judging by the trailer and some very rave reviews – it looks just as good as Superbad.
Just from the trailer alone, we’re shown Molly’s room decked out with photos of Michelle Obama and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a stark difference to the usual teenage boy rooms that often characterise these films.
