More than 40 years since Harrison Ford and Ridley Scott introduced us to the world of Blade Runner (which was, terrifyingly, set in 2019), a new chapter of the franchise is being written.
The film’s dystopian charm is being adapted for the small screen, with Amazon set to release a television series titled Blade Runner 2099.
Scott, who masterminded the original movie, initially announced the project in November 2021, with Amazon confirming it was in development several months later. Over two years on and we finally have more details about the project, including some of the famous names who will lead its cast.
Scroll on for everything you need to know about Blade Runner 2099.
What Is The New Series About?
Blade Runner 2099 is a sequel to both the original 1982 film and its 2017 follow-up, Blade Runner 2049.
As the title indicates, the sci-fi limited series will be set 50 years after the sequel film, or 80 years from the debut.
The storyline is being kept largely under-wraps but based on the existing films, we can expect it to be dystopian and action-packed.
Blade Runner 2099 Cast
The Blade Runner franchise has been star-studded so far, with the original film fronted by Harrison Ford, and the second led by Ryan Gosling and Ana de Armas. Unsurprisingly, the new project is no different.
The cast of Blade Runner 2099 will be led by Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh, of Everything Everywhere All At Once and Wicked. While details are misty, Variety reports that Yeoh will play a character named Olwen. The publication says she has been described as a replicant— a fake human who has been bio-engineered to work on space colonies—near the end of her life.
She will be joined by Euphoria and Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes actress, Hunter Schafer. There has been no word as to her character.
The streamer is yet to unveil the rest of the cast but with Yeoh and Schafer on board, we can be assured the show’s press tour will be a fashion-forward one.
Blade Runner Filming Location
The Czech Film Commission confirmed in February 2024 that Blade Runner 2099 will be filmed in Prague.
Initially, the miniseries had planned to film and been in pre-production in Belfast, Ireland. However, following a delay due to the WGA strikes, it killed those plans in October last year.
Production is expected to begin in late 2024.
