While fans of HBO series Big Little Lies shouldn’t hold their breath for a third season, they could have some other exciting news to celebrate. In the lead up to the show’s recent finale, many members of production made it clear a season three was not likely.
HBO president Casey Bloys has said he “would do anything” with the Big Little Lies team, but the odds of everyone back together for another round of episodes are slim. “The reality is, they are some of the busiest actresses working in Hollywood,” he said, according to TVLine. “I just think it’s not realistic.”
During an appearance at the Television Critics Association press tour, series creator David E. Kelley echoed the sentiment. “No such plan now,” he said when asked about the third season. “I think that it’s one and two, and we like where our closure is at the end of Season 2, so that will probably be it.”

Author Lianne Moriarty, who wrote the book Big Little Lies is based on, isn’t quite finished with the story.
In a conversation with Variety, she shared that a spinoff (at least of the books) could be in the works. “The only thing I had sometimes thought, even before any of this had happened, was maybe jumping ahead to when the children are in high school — years ahead. So, that’s a possibility, but not for years to come. I feel like I would need a break, too, before I did that,” she said.
“That would be for me, for a book,” she continued, “Which maybe wouldn’t even have the same characters. Maybe I’m in the same town. But I don’t know. It’s just thoughts.”
