The first season of the series, which follows five women in California who become embroiled in a murder investigation, is based on the 2014 novel by Liane Moriarty. It debuted in 2017 with Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, and Laura Dern in starring roles.

The show, which Witherspoon and Kidman also produced, won eight Emmy awards before returning for a second season in 2019.

Kidman first revealed the news of a third season when she took to the stage at the Ladies Professional Golf Association Q&A event in Florida.

“I loved Big Little Lies,” Kidman said.

“Because it sort of came along at a time in my life when I had my children and I was thinking I was going to retire. And then this situation came along, where Reese Witherspoon and I were able to produce that show and create that show. And then all of you watched it and made it a massive success.

And we will be bringing you a third one, just FYI.”

Now, in a new interview with Vanity Fair, Kidman and Witherspoon have shared more about making the upcoming season.

“I get the ring ring: ‘Hey, is [season 3] happening?’ Like, Nic,” Witherspoon said to Kidman. “You got excited.”

“I got excited,” Kidman agreed.

“It’s OK, baby. I get excited too. Then I’ve got Laura [Dern] calling me and Zoe [Kravitz] and Shailene [Woodley]. They’re all like, ‘Nic said that we’re making Big Little Lies season three?’

The stars also revealed that the series may be arriving quicker than we expected, with Kidman explaining “we’re moving fast and furious,” with the series.

Most importantly, fans will be happy to know that the book’s author, Liane Moriarty is on board with the new series as she is “delivering the book.”

Who Will Join The Cast Of Big Little Lies Season Three

At this stage, we don’t know exactly who will be returning to or joining the cast of Big Little Lies season three—but that doesn’t mean we don’t have our suspicions.

Due to these recent comments, we can safely assume that Kidman would be reprising her previous role as Celeste and Witherspoon will be returning as Madeline.

It also sounds like Laura Dern will be returning as Renata.

At the Golden Globes in 2020, Dern spoke about reprising her previous role, stating “Well when Reese [Witherspoon] and Nicole [Kidman] get back here you ask them, but I can never say no to Renata, and she is a dream come true to play so it’s impossible to not want to play her more and be with truly my best friends.”

We’re also hoping that the rest of the cast, including Shailene Woodley, Zoe Kravitz, Adam Scott and all of the children (who would now be in their teen years), will be returning.

When it comes to new additions, there’s a rumour that Jennifer Aniston will be joining the cast after Witherspoon joked about it during an interview with the The Times.

After Aniston said, “We wrapped The Morning Show, she went directly to another show. There is no hanging out to be done with this hard-working woman,” Witherspoon was quick to reply, “Come on Big Little Lies.”

We’re secretly hoping this means Jen might be joining the cast of season three.

Sadly however, the show will be returning without director Jean-Marc Vallée, who died in 2021 due to a fatal cardiac arrhythmia.

What Is The Plot Of Big Little Lies Season Three?

While we don’t yet know the plot of season three, we’re guessing it will be picking up where season two left of. If you need a reminder, when we last saw the Monterey five, Celeste had won custody of her children against her ex-husband’s mother. Madeline and Ed renewed their vows, Bonnie told Nathan that she doesn’t love him, while Jane and Corey progressed with their relationship. Most pivotally, Bonnie texts the others that she’s going to confess about Perry’s death and the other women accompany her to the police station.

In interview with ELLE, Kidman described the need for the serious to explore the next chapter of the characters’ lives.

“There’s the richness of the storylines, which we’d always discussed, but it needed time because there’s actual unbelievable depth to the next chapter of these women’s lives and their children’s lives — because children grow up, and that’s kind of fascinating,” Kidman said.

This of course, leaves plenty of interesting plot developments for season three.
