Interiors and fashion have often overlapped, so it should come as no surprise that the biggest home trends for the year ahead take their cues from the runway.
If you’re bored of copper and marble everything, everywhere, and craving something altogether cosier, you’re in luck. The new mood is inviting and comforting, thanks to touch-me textures, natural materials and sumptuous fabrics.
But that’s not to say it’s not chic. This year, your home should be the interior equivalent of your favourite pair of jeans – stylish, timeless and irresistibly comfy.
1. Denim
Arguably the biggest trend for the year ahead, denim – together with its sister shades of navy and indigo – is the stylish new neutral you need in your home. Stepping in where shades of grey and white once reigned, denim is versatile (dress it up; dress it down) and luxurious while also maintaining a relaxed vibe. 2. Natural texture
Swap the cool, luxurious tones of Carrara marble for warmer, earthier materials like terracotta, which is predicted to be on the verge of a major moment. Natural timber, wicker and tactile fabrics like raw linen add personality to an interior and prevent a predominantly white space from appearing too stark. They also wonderfully offset the moodier dark tones of denim and indigo.
3. Velvet
A ‘90s throwback, crushed velvet has made its way into our wardrobes once more – and now our homes are set to follow suit. Tap into the trend with jewel-hued cushions to instantly update your living room’s look. Plum tones of the deepest purple such as the ‘Emington’ cushion in plum is a must have to create this look.
4. Green
Better make that Greenery – the 2017 Pantone colour of the year. A zesty grass green, the colour is said to represent revitalisation and renewal – just what the world is crying out for after a disastrous 2016. Tread carefully with this one and stick to green accents, rather than an all-out approach. We like the look in emerald glassware, fun prints and accent pieces of furniture like ottomans or statement sofas.
5. Handmade treasures
We’re moving away from disposable homewares and investing in pieces that have been carefully made to treasure forever. Choose to invest in a bespoke piece of furniture, handmade beeswax candles or artesian matte-finish tableware, depending on your budget.
