2024 is the year of the older woman-younger man rom-com, it seems.
Hot on the heels of Amazon’s The Idea Of You—which starred Anne Hathaway as a 39-year-old gallery owner who falls for a 24-year-old boy band frontman—Netflix is releasing A Family Affair, which follows a surprising romance between character splayed by Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron.
The film stars Joey King as a young woman who discovers that her mother (Kidman) is sleeping with her boss (Efron), who just so happens to also be a “moderately conceited movie star” (and “Buzzfeed’s hunkiest brunette,” according to the trailer).
This is actually the Australian actress and High School Musical alum’s second time playing on-screen lovers, more than a decade after they co-stared in The Paperboy.

What Is A Family Affair About?
A Family Affair is about a series of “comic consequences” that kick off after a young woman, Zara, discovers her mother has been sleeping with her boss.
In the new trailer for the film we see the hilariously awkward moment Zara walks in on the pair having sex and subsequently hits her head on a doorframe and passes out.
“I saw in it a coming-of-age story for three different characters at three different stages of their lives,” director Richard Lagravenese told Netflix’s Tudum. “I was going through my own sort of transition into what Gail Sheehy called ‘Second Adulthood,’ where after you’ve fulfilled all your expectations and you’ve been what you need to be for everyone else, and you’ve achieved something and children are grown and all that stuff, you get a chance of being who you are and the things that you lost along the way.”
Kidman’s character, Brooke, is going through a similar stage in the movie.
Meanwhile, we can expect to see King’s character navigate having a “nightmare” boss, as well as the awkwardness of having him and her mother fall for each other.
A Family Affair Cast
Joey King and Nicole Kidman lead the cast of A Family Affair as mother-daughter duo Zara and Brooke Ford, alongside Zac Efron who plays Zara’s boss (and Brooke’s lover), Chris Cole.
The Ford family’s star-power doesn’t stop there, either. Brooke’s mother, Leila, is embodied by Oscar-winning actress Kathy Bates.
They are joined by YouTuber-turned-actor Liza Koshy, in the role of Zara’s friend Eugenie.
