The current statistics around ovarian cancer are frightening. Every year, more than 1600 Australia women are diagnosed, and the insidious disease claims more than 1000 lives every year.
The Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation’s (OCRF) main message is simple: #ResearchIsKey. Unlike other cancers, there is currently no early detection test for ovarian cancer (despite what many women believe, a pap smear doesn’t detect it). Because the symptoms are easily missed, ovarian cancer strikes without warning – and when it does, it’s usually advanced.
The key to giving women with ovarian cancer a better long-term outlook is an early detection test, which OCRF is committed to finding through their research. The star-studded guest list, which comprised of Australian celebrities, fashion designers and community leaders, gathered in Sydney to witness the inspiring panel of speakers comprised of; OCRF leading research scientist Dr Kristine Warton, former Foreign Minister and OCRF ambassador Julie Bishop and OCRF ambassador Asher Keddie. The discussion was led by InStyle acting editor Alex Noonan and marie claire editor Nicky Brigger.
“I won’t speak to the statistics any more than we’ve already heard this morning because they are frightening and we all feel the same way. First and foremost I will admit my ignorance, I had absolutely no idea – that one woman every eight hours in this country falls victim to Ovarian Cancer – that flawed me. I was really shocked.
“It was an easy choice for me to make and I thought, ‘you know what this an opportunity to create a bigger discussion about this because no-one was talking about it,'” said Keddie.
Thursday’s luncheon coincides with the fifth anniversary of Georg Jensen’s partnership with the OCRF. To support the organisation’s life-changing work, Georg Jensen has produced the Mercy Heart pendant necklace in sterling silver and 18-karat gold. For every silver pendant purchased, the brand will donate $50 to OCRF; for every gold pendant, $150 will be donated. To say thank you, all the guests were gifted a silver pendant.
Grandiflora created stunning floral arrangements featuring burgundy Magnolias with burnt orange Cymbidium orchards in Georg Jensen Vases. Further highlighting the key message of #ResearchIsKey guests sat for portraits wearing Georg Jensen’s Mercy Heart Pendant.
