Just last month, the makeup moguls over at CoverGirl announced their first ever male model and spokesperson as 17-year-old social media star James Charles.

The move was quick to make headlines, as many praised the cosmetics company for celebrating gender diversity and defying traditional beauty standards.

Now, Nura Afia, a 23-year-old American Hijab-wearing beauty blogger, has been added to CoverGirl’s lineup of eccentric and diverse makeup ambassadors.

The Muslim Youtube star is set to appear on billboards and in commercials for CoverGirl cosmetics.

With over 200,000 subscribers to her YouTube channel and over 300,000 followers on Instagram, Afia revealed to Refinery29 that she hopes this campaign “…will show Muslim women that brands care about us as consumers and we’re important, especially hijabis.”

Afia explains that she started making her own YouTube videos as she felt there was a lack of makeup tutorials featuring women wearing hijabs, revealing: “I wanted to show people that…my scarf isn’t going to stop me”.

“I grew up being insecure about wearing my hijab, and I never thought I would see Muslims represented on such a large scale”, Afia told Refinery29.

Afia’s appointment as a CoverGirl comes just weeks after Muslim-American journalist Noor Tagouri made history as the first women to pose in Playboy wearing a hijab.

Afia joins stars James Charles, singer Katy Perry and actress Sofia Vergara for CoverGirl’s ‘So Lashy!’ campaign, and is set to appear on a billboard in Times Square later this year.
