Actress Winona Ryder has shared her own experiences with Johnny Depp when they were dating in response to Amber Heard’s domestic violence allegations.
She claimed that Johnny was ‘never abusive at all’ during her relationship with him in the early 90s. She told TIME:
“I can only speak from my own experience, which was wildly different than what is being said. I mean, he was never, never that way towards me. Never abusive at all towards me. I only know him as a really good, loving, caring guy who is very, very protective of the people that he loves. It’s hard because I feel like—that’s my experience. And it’s been a very long time.”
The pair started dating after a movie premiere in 1990, and five months after their first date, they were engaged to each other. The also starred in Edward Scissorhands (1990) together as romantic interests. The relationship lasted about four years, and then they parted ways.
Winona again stressed that she could only talk from her own experience, but still found it ‘hard to picture’.
“I’m not calling anyone a liar. I’m just saying, it’s difficult and upsetting for me to wrap my head around it. Look, it was a long time ago, but we were together for four years, and it was a big relationship for me.
“It’s just hard to picture. The only word I can come up with is unimaginable. You know with certain people you hear something and go, “I can see that.” But this isn’t that. So anyway this is the first time I’ve said anything so I don’t know. I can only offer my own experience. It’s such a serious, horrible thing to be accused of.”
Amber Heard currently has a restraining order against Johnny Depp while they work out their divorce.
Johnny Depp’s lawyer, Laura Wasser, has said that Amber Heard “is attempting to secure a premature financial resolution by alleging abuse.”
