Victoria Beckham Has Found Starting A Beauty Brand At 45 ‘Very Liberating’

“In the past, I’ve probably hidden behind my armour”

If you want proof that life gets better with age, just look at Victoria Beckham

In her early 20s, she shot to fame as one-fifth of the pop group Spice Girls in 1996. Even after the girl group split, Victoria secured herself four UK Top 10 singles. Looking like life couldn’t get any better, she then went and changed industries completely, launching her own eponymous fashion label in 2008.

Now, she’s adding beauty mogul to her resume. 

Victoria Beckham Beauty, which launched alongside her latest Victoria Beckham Spring/Summer 2020 collection at London Fashion Week, has a focus on sustainable, clean beauty that’s luxurious yet cruelty-free, and it is everything Victoria Beckham – and her clothing – is: minimalist, sophisticated and empowering.

In a behind-the-scenes video shared on the Victoria Beckham Beauty Instagram account, Victoria says, “When developing all of the makeup, we said that we wanted to be incredibly inclusive, and that’s exactly what we’ve done. We all have completely different skin types, we’re all completely different colors, completely different ages, and we’re all wearing the same makeup.”

Launching her beauty brand isn’t just a gift for the world – it’s been a rewarding journey for Victoria, too. “I want to be honest. In the past, I’ve probably hidden behind my armour – the not smiling publicly, for instance. There’s less of that now,” she told Glamour UK.

“There’s something really liberating about embracing who I am at 45 years old and owning it, feeling confident, feeling content. Doing beauty has really helped with that – it’s been very liberating. I want to spread the word that everybody should feel like the best version of themselves. To look after what you have. I want to tell people to own who you are. Yes, we – and I – have wrinkles, and that’s OK!”

In fact, she’s so okay with her wrinkles that she has left them on full display in the brand’s campaign imagery. It’s part of her honest approach to beauty and her message of embracing imperfection.

“What’s real and what’s not has become so blurred with Photoshop. I believe people want to see pictures that are real. When I was going through the imagery [in which VB features heavily] with the team, it wasn’t about perfectly retouching things,” she told Glamour UK.

“I also hate seeing the words ‘anti-ageing’ and ‘anti-wrinkle’ [on products] – what is that about? It should just be about having the best skin you can have.”

So far, the Victoria Beckham Beauty range includes four Smoky Eye Bricks palettes, Lid Lustre crème eyeshadow pots in four shades, and three Satin Kajal Liners.

Victoria plans to add a range of lip products to her beauty brand in October, then skincare in November.
