The father-daughter duo were among seven other passengers who were on their way to a basketball tournament at Mamba Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks, where Kobe was due to coach and Gianna was expected to play.
Now, in her first public move since the news was announced, Vanessa has paid tribute to her husband and daughter on Instagram, sharing a heartbreaking post to her followers and fans thanking them for their support.
“My girls and I want to thank the millions of people who’ve shown support and love during this horrific time. Thank you for all the prayers. We definitely need them. We are completely devastated by the sudden loss of my adoring husband, Kobe — the amazing father of our children; and my beautiful, sweet Gianna — a loving, thoughtful, and wonderful daughter, and amazing sister to Natalia, Bianka, and Capri.”
“There aren’t enough words to describe our pain right now. I take comfort in knowing that Kobe and Gigi both knew that they were so deeply loved. We were so incredibly blessed to have them in our lives. I wish they were here with us forever. They were our beautiful blessings taken from us too soon.”
Vanessa was married to Kobe for 18 years and shares four daughters with the NBA legend. In November 2019, the couple celebrated their long-term relationship, Kobe posting to Instagram;
“On this day 20 years ago I met my best friend, my Queen @vanessabryant I decided to take her on a date to Disneyland tonight to celebrate old school style (pre 4princesses) I love you my mamacita per sempre,” the post read.
In an interview with Alex Rodriguez in 2018, Bryant shared the sweet reason he began travelling by helicopter from his home in Orange County, explaining that it gave him more time to spend with his family.
“Traffic started getting really, really bad,” Kobe said during the interview. “I was sitting in traffic and I wound up missing like a school play because I was sitting in traffic.”
“This thing just kept mounting, and I had to figure out a way that I could still train and focus on the craft but still not compromise family time,” Kobe explained. “So that’s when I looked into helicopters and being able to get down and back in 15 minutes.”
