The record was previously held by Russian gymnast Svetlana Khorkina, who had 20 World Championship medals when she retired in 2004 at the age 25. Simone is only 22 years old, however next year will likely be her last. She told press earlier this year that she will retire after the 2020 Tokyo Olympic games.
Before she hangs up her leotard, Simone has one more title to take out, and she will likely do so within the next few days. She is just two medals shy of the overall record held by 1990s Belarusian male gymnast Vitaly Scherbo, and is expected to secure those medals during the Women’s All-Around Final on Thursday and over the weekend, where she will compete in four individual event finals. She’s been undefeated in all-arounds for six years.
Despite her success, Simone still gets nervous before every competition. “I hate that feeling like I’m going to puke before,” she told NBC Sports. “But, you know, we love the thrill of it. Reminds me to never give up because one day I won’t have the opportunity to get that feeling.”
